Project Title: Closing the Gap on Children’s Vision
Project Description:
The Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation’s current request is for eye exams for school children without vision insurance or the means to pay. The Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation‘s newest program “Closing the Gap on Children’s Vision Screeningtm “ was created to bring vision exams and eyeglasses directly to the school for students with no vision insurance and those on AHCCCS. This program is made possible by a strong partnership with school nurses, the Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing Foundation, and One Source Mobile Eye Healthcare.
This program was created due to the overwhelming concerns and requests by school nurses for help to address the ever-increasing number of children that are identified to be seen by an eye doctor, yet no action is taken by the parent. This growing population of children are not being taken to an eye doctor after the parent is notified by the school nurse or teacher that their child did not pass an eye screening or is having difficulty seeing the “board” or reading the words on a page. Too many times the child suffers due to this lack of action resulting in disciplinary issues, poor grades, and a lack of self-esteem due to failing grades.
A grant from the Hermanowski Foundation could provide 100 school-aged children with an eye exam. Prescription eyeglasses would be funded by donations from Arizona Lions Clubs and working poor donations. The Foundation has funding for eyeglasses when needed from AZ Lions Clubs.
Services could be delivered during the next school year at any of the following school sites:
Whitman and Kerr Elementary Schools, Don Mensendick, Sunset Elementary, Anthem K-8, Ironwood Elementary, Road Runner, Patterson Elementary, Royal Palms Middle School, Mountain View, Discovery Elementary, Glen F. Burton School, Liberty Elementary, Sunny Slope, Palm Valley, Palo Verde, Marco De Niza, Pueblo Del Sol, Avondale Middle School, and Lattie Coore Elementary.
