Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 03/10/2023
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Broadening Horizons at Fall River Deaconess Home (FRDH)
Project Description:

FRDH respectfully requests consideration of a full grant proposal to provide enrichment activities to youth in southeastern Massachusetts who have experienced significant trauma and other challenges.

Research consistently shows trauma creates toxic stress that impacts brain development, learning, attention, and memory, and increases risk of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Childhood trauma has been linked to health conditions in adulthood, including cardiovascular disease, mental health problems, and other chronic illnesses, as well as lowered levels of educational attainment, employment, and income. Untreated trauma significantly impacts the individual and family and has societal and economic costs. Treatment must mitigate trauma’s impacts and prevent reoccurrences of further harm; services must be comprehensive and multifaceted.

FRDH’s Community-Based Support and Stabilization Services provide comprehensive treatment to youth, ages 18 months to 22 years, who have experienced trauma such as neglect and physical and sexual abuse. Services include specialized clinical treatment, psychiatric consultation, healthcare, educational supports, services and advocacy, vocational preparation, and an engaging program activity schedule.

To optimize engagement in treatment and education, FRDH provides emergency basic needs, enrichment activities, and support for vocational opportunities under our Broadening Horizons Project. As a primarily state-funded organization, these are not allowable expenditures. We rely on the generosity of donors and foundations to provide these additional supports, which impact short- and long-term health and wellness outcomes.

Support for our activities program will allow us to continue to provide and to expand access to healthy, age-appropriate, enrichment activities for service recipients ages 11-21. Exposure to new experiences–such as museums, theatres, aquariums and zoos–improves lives by broadening horizons, expanding interests, and building skills. Lives are transformed when youth envision different alternatives and future possibilities. We would welcome the opportunity to partner with the Hermanowski Family Foundation to help youth reach their full potential.

Total Project Budget: $30,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The supports provided within our Broadening Horizons Project are not allowable expenditures under state-funding guidelines. We rely on the generosity of donors and foundations to provide these critical and life-changing supports. For the current fiscal year, $18,000 of the $30,000 budget has been raised, including $1,000 from the Bristol County District Attorney’s Community Fund, $1,000 from Walmart, $7,500 from the Andrade-Faxon Charities for Children, $2,500 from the United Way, and $6,000 in individual donations. Pending requests have been made to the Red Sox Foundation and the TJX Foundation, both of whom have previously supported this project. While we anticipate continued support, this is the first proposal for 2024 funding, and as such, we do not yet have commitments beyond this fiscal year.

Project Duration: Ongoing (funding request 01/2024–10/2024)

Project Title: Children and Youth Mental Wellness Program
Project Description:

Our Children and Youth Mental Wellness program serves Palm Beach County (PBC) children/youth 3-18 who are otherwise denied services due to inability to afford. Our Children and Youth Mental Wellness program helps those served regulate their emotions, stop self-harming behaviors and suicide ideation/attempts and prevents costly, additionally traumatic inpatient placements.

Serving this need since 2012, and with the mental health ramifications of Covid, the current need has never been greater. In 2022, we provided services to 200+ children/youth through our community-centered ‘avenues to care’; in-office, telehealth, satellite locations and Mobile Hope Clinic (MHC).

Services to in-need children/youth are always:

• FREE to those who qualify
• provided by qualified therapists experienced in child/youth trauma
• offered in English, Spanish, Creole, reducing language barriers
• available without a waitlist
• provided through several easily accessible access points through our ‘avenues to care’

The MHC is our most innovative addition to our avenues to care in our mission to ensure ALL children/youth can receive care regardless of socioeconomic status. The MHC is PBC’s first and only mobile mental healthcare office, operating on our highly successful ‘community-partner model’; partnering with other local agencies where children/youth already visit for other services, thereby eliminating the hardship of additional travel to us. Since the MHC’s rollout in May 2021, 150+ high-need children/youth have been able to access services aboard the MHC.

Clients without insurance/living below poverty level are offered 8-10 FREE sessions. Those not qualifying for free sessions are offered extremely reduced sliding scale rates starting at just $45 per session with grant funding subsidizing the deficit.

Continued funding from the Hermanowski Foundation in 2024 will support the increasing need for direct mental healthcare services to children/youth through any of our avenues to care. An award of $10,000 will provide services to approximately 20 at-risk children/youth in 2024.

Project Title: JoyRx Music
Project Description:

More than 1,700 children and adolescents younger than 20 years of age are diagnosed with cancer every
year in Texas. It is the most common cause of disease-related mortality for Texans 0-19 years of age. Our
mission at JoyRx, the mission delivery arm of Children’s Cancer Association (CCA), is to treat cancer and serious illnesses with more than medicine. When a child is facing life’s most challenging moments, they also need emotional healing. Through its flagship program, JoyRx Music, CCA empowers kids and teens to shift their emotional states during stressful and painful experiences related to life-threatening illnesses. By utilizing music’s universal appeal to buoy spirits and energize, JoyRx Music helps young patients feel Joy during stressful and painful experiences associated with prolonged hospitalizations and life-threatening illnesses. Trained JoyRx Music Specialists engage hospitalized kids of all ages and diagnoses by offering them a choice of "music medicine" experiences tailored to their current emotional state. No-cost bedside and virtual program options are available and tailored for one-on-one or group music experiences. Young patients can choose to watch a live music session, request a song, sing along, engage in music lessons, and even grab an instrument to join the band—whatever feels right and brings Joy to them in the moment. Over two decades ago, CCA began delivering the healing power of music to children and teens facing cancer and other serious illnesses. Today, JoyRx Music’s patient experience includes bedside service as restrictions
allow, in-hospital concerts, and digital programs designed to relieve stress, anxiety, and perception of pain. Our programs "prescribe Joy" to positively shift moods and relieve the sadness, anxiety, and isolation
experienced during lengthy hospitalizations.
Our goal is to serve over 300 patients this year and engage kids and teens, and their families, in 2,000 Joybased interactions. With three full-time staff in Austin, JoyRx is well-positioned to continue expanding these services into the future.
