Project Title: Broadening Horizons at Fall River Deaconess Home (FRDH)
Project Description:

FRDH respectfully requests consideration of a full grant proposal to provide enrichment activities to youth in southeastern Massachusetts who have experienced significant trauma and other challenges.

Research consistently shows trauma creates toxic stress that impacts brain development, learning, attention, and memory, and increases risk of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Childhood trauma has been linked to health conditions in adulthood, including cardiovascular disease, mental health problems, and other chronic illnesses, as well as lowered levels of educational attainment, employment, and income. Untreated trauma significantly impacts the individual and family and has societal and economic costs. Treatment must mitigate trauma’s impacts and prevent reoccurrences of further harm; services must be comprehensive and multifaceted.

FRDH’s Community-Based Support and Stabilization Services provide comprehensive treatment to youth, ages 18 months to 22 years, who have experienced trauma such as neglect and physical and sexual abuse. Services include specialized clinical treatment, psychiatric consultation, healthcare, educational supports, services and advocacy, vocational preparation, and an engaging program activity schedule.

To optimize engagement in treatment and education, FRDH provides emergency basic needs, enrichment activities, and support for vocational opportunities under our Broadening Horizons Project. As a primarily state-funded organization, these are not allowable expenditures. We rely on the generosity of donors and foundations to provide these additional supports, which impact short- and long-term health and wellness outcomes.

Support for our activities program will allow us to continue to provide and to expand access to healthy, age-appropriate, enrichment activities for service recipients ages 11-21. Exposure to new experiences–such as museums, theatres, aquariums and zoos–improves lives by broadening horizons, expanding interests, and building skills. Lives are transformed when youth envision different alternatives and future possibilities. We would welcome the opportunity to partner with the Hermanowski Family Foundation to help youth reach their full potential.

Total Project Budget: $30,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The supports provided within our Broadening Horizons Project are not allowable expenditures under state-funding guidelines. We rely on the generosity of donors and foundations to provide these critical and life-changing supports. For the current fiscal year, $18,000 of the $30,000 budget has been raised, including $1,000 from the Bristol County District Attorney’s Community Fund, $1,000 from Walmart, $7,500 from the Andrade-Faxon Charities for Children, $2,500 from the United Way, and $6,000 in individual donations. Pending requests have been made to the Red Sox Foundation and the TJX Foundation, both of whom have previously supported this project. While we anticipate continued support, this is the first proposal for 2024 funding, and as such, we do not yet have commitments beyond this fiscal year.

Project Duration: Ongoing (funding request 01/2024–10/2024)
Geographical Area Served: Southeastern Massachusetts, primarily greater Fall River and greater New Bedford areas
Age Group To Be Served: 11-21
