Project Description:

Through our frequent gathering with the kids and young people, we are challenged with transportation (pick and drop off) as most kids are with single parents who can’t afford to bring them for activities as they are working a lot for survival. Having a van that can provide safe transportation to our kids will be a heavy load lifted and they will be very happy to be picked and brought to gather with others and be part of every project that we arrange. We would be very grateful if The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation help us in achieving this our goal of making these kids happy together by not missing.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 1/19/2023
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Equipment
Project Description:

Westover School is an independent boarding and day school in Connecticut that serves 185 girls in grades 9-12 from 14 states and 14 countries. Westover’s mission is to empower young women to lead lives of consequence. The school’s core values of strength of character, women’s empowerment, passion for learning, and community are fundamental characteristics of citizens who are dedicated to making a better world for those who come after us.

Our WISE program supports Westover’s mission by preparing young women to pursue science and engineering fields in college, areas in which women are typically underrepresented, and to become leaders in their chosen careers.

WISE courses provide real-world application to the fields of science and engineering. Through student-centered, hands-on experiential learning, students gain the confidence to think critically and creatively in problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and documentation. In the last five years, over 70% of our WISE graduates have entered college intending to major in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

We are seeking funding to purchase an MDX-50 benchtop CNC mill. With this equipment, students will gain technical and industrial skills and learn industrial standards. This piece of equipment will be used in the classroom and after-school programming to help make building prototypes more efficient and give students exposure to higher forms of prototyping and manufacturing. Students will learn how to use this tool which is common in industry and higher education.

New equipment would provide needed support to the program and the overall Westover curriculum. A focus of the department’s strategic plan is to integrate WISE courses into all disciplines including English, history, science, and math. The upgraded equipment would provide a valuable resource to the entire school community. Fulfillment of this item would help the school, as a whole, evolve with the ever-changing landscape of education.

Project Title: Parent and Caregiver Curriculum
Project Description:

Our goal for this year is to create a curriculum for parents and caregivers on how to best support their child. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the already growing youth mental health crisis. From March to October 2020, the proportion of emergency room visits for mental health-related concerns increased 24% for children aged 5-11 and 31% among adolescents aged 12-17 compared to the same timeframe in 2019. Many parents and caregivers were at a loss of what to do as many of these mental health symptoms were being experienced for the first time.
The intention is to have an educational curriculum designed for parents and caregivers with the idea that by arming parents with this information, we can help parents feel prepared to manage their child’s crisis, take preventative measures to manage their child’s treatment to reduce hospitalizations, and feel empowered to care for their own mental health and experience decreased feelings of burnout. Our plan for our second year of the curriculum is to partner with providers, so that they can help us understand the efficacy of the program. Parents and caregivers in our community will benefit from psychoeducation that is paired with peer support, creating optimal learning and support for our constituency.
The curriculum aims to answer, “What are the signs and symptoms of a mood disorder?” and “Where should you go to look for help?” These resources alongside promoting self-care for parents and caregivers will help them understand decisions around what should be done for their children’s mental health care. Encouraging parents to be co-decision makers in their child’s mental health journey is also crucial to education. A grant from the the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would support our efforts to create this important curriculum for parents and caregivers.
