We will produce an open audition children’s theater production for community kids ages 7-17. Most of the crew for the production will also be in that age range. There will be no charge to participate so this opportunity will be accessible to all community children. We have been able to do these productions in the past and found them to be very successful in creating a diverse and inclusive cast and crew. Project Title: Supporting Youth Development at Boys Home
Project Description:

Boys Home provides residential youth development services to young men in grades 1-12 from across the country. All students arrive on campus having experienced significant adversities in their lives and/or struggles within the traditional academic setting. Some of these situations include difficult adoptions, unsafe home and community environments, behavioral struggles, and families that simply struggle to meet the student’s needs. Students are provided with individualized education within small classes, consistent care, leadership and leadership training, and social-emotional support in order to find positive ways to navigate their traumas and improve the trajectories of their lives. Currently, over 70% of the population identifies as a person of color and many students are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Boys Home has been operating for over 100 years with a mission to help build successful young men, never turning a student away due to his family’s financial situation. All requested funds would go directly towards programming support and meeting the daily needs of students. This includes, but is not limited to, dietary, medical, educational, clothing, and recreational needs.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 01/24/2023
Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: Family Assistance Program – Medical Travel
Project Description:

Because of the significant medical complexities that are present with CHARGE syndrome, families are often forced to travel long distances for specialized medical and therapeutic care for their child. This funding will be used to cover transportation, meals, lodging, and parking for medical care that requires out of state/long distance travel. The program is intended for families who would benefit from assistance to cover the cost for travel to receive medical care for their family member with CHARGE syndrome.
This program benefits individuals with CHARGE syndrome and their families or caregivers, particularly families with household incomes below $50,000 annually. Since its inception, the Foundation has supported over 400 families across the United States with costs associated with their necessary medical travel. In response to rising costs of travel, the program is being expanded to increase average award amounts from $620 per request to $720 per request. The Foundation hopes to assist at least 14 families with this award.

Award Requirements:
• A family member must have a diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome
• Applicant must live and receive medical care in the United States
• Eligible Travel must be over 100 miles roundtrip
Reimbursable Expenses:
• Transportation, including gas, airfare or train fare
• Meals during travel
• Lodging
• Parking

If a family has an unplanned medical trip, which can be common with a complex and medically severe condition like CHARGE syndrome, they can request reimbursement within 30 days after returning home from a completed treatment.

This program is evaluated on an annual basis, and reports are disseminated quarterly. Key performance indicators for 2023 include: an increase in average award amounts by 16%, an increase in awards to households with a combined total household income of less than $50,000 and an improvement in physical and mental health of awarded individuals.

Project Title: Heart F.E.L.T. (Feeding Empty Little Tummies)
Project Description:

The Ladies of Charity Calvert County Food Pantry Heart F.E.L.T. (Feeding Empty Little Tummies) program was designed to help improve the lives of children by providing nutrients essential to be able to succeed in school and reach their full potential. “Studies show that children from homes that lack consistent access to food are more likely to experience developmental impairments in areas like language, motor skills, and behavior.” (FeedingAmerica.org) We provide weekend meals for elementary and middle school students whose families are on assistance. The initials and grades of the children in need are supplied by the school’s counselors. The Ladies of Charity Calvert County Food Pantry will then deliver separate backpacks each week to the schools containing food for seven meals for each child listed to feed them over the weekends; three dinners, two breakfasts and two lunches plus snacks. Extra meals are supplied for holiday weekends. The empty backpacks are picked up at the beginning of the next week and refilled. The cost for the food is approximately $18-25 per week per child, annual costs are over $14,000. The program runs weekly through the school year and over the summer. Funds for this project are obtained through local donations. With the rising costs of food it has become more challenging to provide these meals and we appreciate the ability to partner with the Hermanowski foundation to continue the program.

Project Title: First Serve—Transforming Communities Through Youth Development
Project Description:

First Serve has positively impacted the lives of over 600 Palm Beach County youth as reflected in improved grades, graduation rates and postsecondary pursuits. Our proposed project sustains and expands our successful youth development programs chapters in at-risk communities—Boynton Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, Belle Glade, South Bay. Our 2-pronged system entails: 1) developing youth leaders through an intensive mentoring program; and 2) employing these youth at a competitive wage to serve as role models to primary/middle school students in structured afterschool activities. Trained, dedicated mentors are paired with selected local teens (ages 16-19) and deliver an intensive 15-part Wisdom-Based Education program. The education is built on 9 pillars—emotional reactivity, teamwork, authentic leadership, critical thinking generosity, self-esteem, responsibility, anti-bullying and self-awareness—that combined, have proven effective in catalyzing personal growth and positive community impact. The education is reinforced by 1:1 weekly mentor/mentee “check-ins” and supplemented by individualized postsecondary education planning sessions with a career counselor, with 5 of the Coaches awarded scholarship support (based on performance) at the program’s end. The mentored youth are concurrently employed by First Serve to Coach local 1st-8th grade students in a free afterschool program (~600 hours/school year) that focuses on academic tutoring, life skills/character education, sports activities and arts/creativity development. Recently, community residents and stakeholders expressed the need to expand our services and reach greater numbers of primary/secondary school students following the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on families living in poverty. We have heeded this request, extending our program from 10 months to a full year and adding a 6-week/full-day program during the summer at our Belle Glade Chapter. Hermanowski Family Foundation funding will enable us to not only to maintain our newly enhanced year-round program, but also to explore bringing it to other First Serve Chapters.

Project Title: Gus Bus
Project Description:

According to the 2018 Census, 23.3% of Harrisonburg citizens live in poverty. A recent ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) report states that 65% of families with children here have income below the ALICE threshold level; this is 28% more than the state average. A family’s financial limits can make it difficult for parents to provide support that will aid in their children’s education, such as books and supplemental literacy activities.
Our mobile classrooms regularly visit the areas where most families have financial and/or transportation barriers to instruction like ours—instruction that inspires creativity, promotes social-emotional growth, and improves educational achievement. The Gus Bus takes literacy on the road to meet historically marginalized students and families where they live, bringing high quality children’s literature right into the heart of their neighborhoods.
Throughout most of the school year and summer months, the Gus Bus provides weekly or twice-weekly programming at each of our neighborhood stops. Currently, we serve more than 425 students in 19 unique neighborhoods with mobile-classroom visits, school-based programs, and in-home tutoring programs. The Gus Bus has been delivering books and resources to low-income neighborhoods since 2003.
