Project Title: One-to-One Mentoring
Project Description:

Fueled by the knowledge that all youth can accomplish BIG things, for over 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami (BBBS Miami) has been South Florida’s premier mentoring organization, creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

The One-to-One Mentoring program is at the core of BBBS Miami. By matching at-risk youth (Littles) with committed adult mentors (Bigs), we ensure all youth, no matter their background, have a positive role model who empowers them to achieve their full potential and become the leaders of tomorrow. Expanding upon the traditional mentoring model, BBBS Miami offers a variety of mentoring opportunities for youth in the community. In response to COVID-19 concerns, all activities can be held either in-person or virtually.

• Community-Based Mentoring: Bigs and Littles explore the local community together at least twice monthly and share fun, culturally enriching activities they both enjoy.
• Bigs in Schools: Bigs visit their Littles at school or at the Carnival Center for Excellence after school once a week throughout the school year.
• School to Work: Littles in high school are transported to their Bigs’ place of work once a month throughout the school year for a morning of life skills and career development, as well as one-to-one job shadowing and mentoring.
• Graduate Program: Littles who graduate high school and their Bigs have the option to receive continued professional support of their mentoring relationship as the Little begins to navigate adult life.
• Bigs in Blue: Local police officers serve as Bigs through any one of the one-to-one mentoring programs.

BBBS Miami programs provide today’s youth with the resources necessary for tomorrow’s success. By providing a variety of mentoring opportunities for youth in the community, BBBS Miami gives youth a chance to achieve their full potential.

Project Title: Bright Lights Greenville Hygiene Kits
Project Description:

Bright Lights Greenville was started by my family – my parents, Mark and Shannon, and my siblings, Mary Kate, Evan, Maggie, and myself, Connor Farrell. We have always felt God was calling us to act upon the large and growing number of homeless in our city. As a foster family, we already saw the pain, fear, and starvation that some children we fostered had experienced – experiences quite similar to those endured by many homeless in Greenville. Originally, Bright Lights Greenville started as merely a method through which we hoped to brighten the day of the homeless. We began by giving out a small, care package containing food, cleaning necessities, and toiletries, along with a motivational Bible verse to let them know that they are loved in times of stress and doubt. We kept these little bags in the front seat of our car to hand out to any homeless person we drove by in our area.
For years we continued to hand out our care packages. However, due to COVID, we really began to feel God calling us to do more. Since the summer of 2020, Bright Lights Greenville has blossomed and grown. We have partnered with Triune Mercy Center to package about 50 hygiene care packages each month. These hygiene kits are now complete with shampoo, conditioner, razor, lotion, deodorant, washcloth, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, and a motivational Bible verse. We buy, package, and bring the hygiene bags on the first Sunday of each month to Triune Mercy Center where they are distributed to the homeless.

Currently, we only have the means to produce 50 hygiene kits each month. My siblings and I pool the money that we make through our various jobs: pet sitting, lifeguarding, and being a referee for local soccer games. Our parents pitch in and provide the rest of the funds to create our monthly 50 kits. However, if we should be granted $1,000, we would use this money to produce more hygiene kits. We believe we would be able to produce 100 kits each month with the Hermanowski Foundation grant. This way our kits will be able to reach many more homeless!
Throughout my entire life, my parents have always told us that my siblings and I are beyond blessed. Through Bright Lights Greenville, we have been able to witness how blessed we truly are. It gives us joy to see all of the people standing outside Triune Mercy Center every month, waiting for the hygiene kits that we provide. When we see the smiles of gratitude on their faces, we see Christ reflected in their eyes. Bright Lights Greenville is meant to be a bright light in someone’s day, and we believe that our kits are making a difference in the lives of the homeless here in Greenville.

Project Title: TCP Young Leaders
Project Description:

After working with local schools for the past four years it has become evident that many youths in northern and parts of western Anne Arundel County are becoming like dead fish floating through life. Many educators and principals working in low-income communities have stated “our 9th graders are becoming lost halfway through their freshman year and we are struggling to get them back on track.”

Youth growing up in Brooklyn Park, MD live in a community where upwards of 27.3% of residents live under the poverty line. They also live in a designated food desert, where adolescents lack positive role models, all leading them to turning to the streets, social media, and negative influences for support and guidance.

With a mission to “Unleash the Leader Within” Anne Arundel County teens, TCP Young Leaders seeks to
1. develop future leaders by developing and enhancing teens emotional intelligence (social, emotional, cognitive) and leadership skills and capabilities;
2. introduce teens to business/entrepreneurial fundamentals and thinking by having them create and pitch business presentations; and
3. STEM workforce awareness and preparedness opportunities to prepare teens for life after school – through field trips to businesses where they engage in-hands on activities with employees to learn about different jobs.

The TCP Young Leaders program is a 30-week, project-based program for middle and high school youth. This program utilizes a business & leadership curriculum that develops and enhances each student’s 21st century workforce skills and emotional intelligence. Resulting from the program is a business plan competition and a student-led community event. The business plans are centered around solutions/ideas that will help improve the quality of life in the community where students live. Upon completing their presentations, students plan a community event to bring their ideas to life.

Project Title: Connectivity Update
Project Description:

It has been proposed that we acquire the following network equipment and implement the network ourselves, saving valuable labor costs and maintaining the network ourselves. While this network doesn’t have a cheap price tag it is designed to allow for future expansion both in number of users and the number of devices that we want to add to it such as phones, cameras, door access and more.
In addition to replacing these components. We would also be removing most of the old cabling cleaning up the current network area near the office.
Key points about this network
Allows for remote management
Can be set up to self-resolve network issues
Designed to be used in a business setting
Will allow for us easily expand the network in the future
The design of the network is twofold. The wired network and the wireless network.

Project Title: Junior Rancher Mentor Program
Project Description:

In the Junior Ranchers Mentor Program, participants are put into groups of no more than 8 individuals based on age, gender, and life circumstance. The group setting allows participants to build friendships, practice social skills, learn teamwork, and develop leader characteristics. All services are completely free-of-charge and to ensure that sessions are primarily volunteer-led. Volunteers are trained in basic natural horsemanship, equipment safety and maintenance, intentional mentorship, and under an LCSW- with over 20 years of experience as a trauma therapist- learn how to engage in a healthy mentor relationship with those who have been through trauma.

The Junior Rancher groups meets every-other week and each session is 3 hours long. Session Seasons are divided into Spring, Summer, and Fall in which the duration of each is 3-4 months. The Sessions are planned by the Volunteer Leaders prior to the arrival of participants. They consist of accomplishing a chore involving horse care, an activity involving the horses to learn horsemanship and teamwork, and a "regroup" time of discussion and reflection. Volunteers plan lessons and guide conversations with the goal of building confidence, trust, and inspiring hope within the participants.

We evaluate the success of Junior Ranchers through observing the progress of the participant and how they’ve grown throughout being involved in sessions, spontaneous feedback and an end-of-season form feedback from parents/guardians and participants, the number of applications received upon recommendation of a current or former Ranch participant, and the number of participants who transition to volunteering once their age permits.

The requested amount is the total cost of maintaining a session horse for an entire year. They are the heart and soul of our session program and one of our core values is to ensure they are well cared for and content with what they do. Regular care like feed, supplements, farrier and vet visits, and barn maintenance are imperative to the session program to maintain the comfort of our horses so they can care for our participants.
