Project Title: TCP Young Leaders
Project Description:
After working with local schools for the past four years it has become evident that many youths in northern and parts of western Anne Arundel County are becoming like dead fish floating through life. Many educators and principals working in low-income communities have stated “our 9th graders are becoming lost halfway through their freshman year and we are struggling to get them back on track.”
Youth growing up in Brooklyn Park, MD live in a community where upwards of 27.3% of residents live under the poverty line. They also live in a designated food desert, where adolescents lack positive role models, all leading them to turning to the streets, social media, and negative influences for support and guidance.
With a mission to “Unleash the Leader Within” Anne Arundel County teens, TCP Young Leaders seeks to
1. develop future leaders by developing and enhancing teens emotional intelligence (social, emotional, cognitive) and leadership skills and capabilities;
2. introduce teens to business/entrepreneurial fundamentals and thinking by having them create and pitch business presentations; and
3. STEM workforce awareness and preparedness opportunities to prepare teens for life after school – through field trips to businesses where they engage in-hands on activities with employees to learn about different jobs.
The TCP Young Leaders program is a 30-week, project-based program for middle and high school youth. This program utilizes a business & leadership curriculum that develops and enhances each student’s 21st century workforce skills and emotional intelligence. Resulting from the program is a business plan competition and a student-led community event. The business plans are centered around solutions/ideas that will help improve the quality of life in the community where students live. Upon completing their presentations, students plan a community event to bring their ideas to life.
