Project Title: Youth Arts Program
Project Description:

The WestPalmCAT offers arts education to historically underserved high school students as a path towards graduation and a better economic future. Students in grades 9 -12 are recruited from underperforming schools in West Palm Beach.

Adolescents learn critical thinking & problem solving through mentor-led arts education, a proven strategy to move students toward graduation & post-secondary learning. The visual/digital art classes are delivered at no charge by teacher/mentors who are professionals in the field.

This program, modeled after the Manchester Bidwell Center with a 50-year track record of success, paves the way for these students to graduate from high school & choose a path towards a career, be it post-secondary education or a job-training program. The Manchester Bidwell Educational Model has been replicated in 12 centers worldwide (11 across the US, 1 in Israel). The WestPalmCAT’s Youth Arts program does not focus on creating artists —but rather opens the minds of students to the possibility of fuller, richer life. Art is a tool used to connect with students.

The program provides after school programing for up to 30 students who attend underserved/under resourced public high school(s). We partner with public high schools to recruit those who are engaging in risky behaviors and/or associated with negative peer groups, are unsupervised between the hours of 2 & 6 PM, have high absenteeism rates, and struggle academically.

Through arts mentorship, students have opportunities to participate in applied learning activities that stress higher order critical thinking & problem-solving skills and to showcase their abilities to the community. Short term objectives are to increase school attendance, to increase academic achievement and lessen incidents of behavior that results in suspensions. The overarching goal of the program is for students to graduate on time with their class and have plans for post-secondary education or employment.

Project Title: Creating a Life Plan
Project Description:

Founded in 1997 by a former news anchor and award-winning journalist, Jennifer Valoppi, the Women of Tomorrow Mentor and Scholarship Program has upheld its mission to inspire, motivate, and empower at-risk young women to live up to their full potential through a unique group mentoring program with highly accomplished professional women and scholarship opportunities. Due to the pandemic, Women of Tomorrow (WOT) has shifted to virtual mentoring, workshops, and field trips. We are committed to meeting our students’ current needs and continuing to assist them in planning for their futures.

The Women of Tomorrow Program currently collaborate with twenty-four public schools in Palm Beach County, with the majority of participants being minority students who come from low-income homes. Most will be the first in their family to graduate from high school, helping to end the historical cycle of insufficiency. While our program was carefully designed and based on research, its ongoing success is due to our continual curriculum development commitment. Our mentoring program is aligned with several critical evidence-based best practices, including a relationship-based mentoring model that ensures a steady source of support, acts as a bridge through high school and advanced education, and provides a smooth transition into the workforce.

Grant funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will help WOT in our efforts to develop further our "Creating a Life Plan" curriculum. Through this, our students are introduced to multiple pathways to success, including college, technical college, and vocational training. The goal is to share career opportunities that provide a path out of poverty and a sense of personal satisfaction. Coupled with the feeling of connectedness brought about from participation in the WOT program, this curriculum helps our girls find the courage and inspiration to change their lives’ trajectory and become successful community members.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 10, 2021
Requested Amount: $7,770

Project Title: Community Partners in Education
Project Description:

In 2020, Cruces Creatives (our area’s non-profit makerspace) partnered with the Las Cruces Community Schools, CommunityShare (an AZ-based nonprofit), and The Stocker Foundation to launch Community Partners in Education, which connects teachers with community partners to enliven academic learning with expertise from community members and tools from the makerspace. Even during the pandemic, we have been able to reach over 400 middle school students in our low-income, minority-as-majority community through projects including composting at home and at school, a recycled art show and virtual museum (hosted on a website developed by students themselves!), and a remote digital manufacturing project where students use free, online software to create computer-aided design files that then fabricate the students’ designs using makerspace tools including laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC machines, and more.

This work is coordinated through a software platform developed by CommunityShare, and with $7,770 in funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we would be able to secure a license to expand the software support from the four Las Cruces Community Schools to all 41 of the Las Cruces Public Schools, bringing an additional 22,000 students into the project’s scope. Following findings reported by the Cambridge Handbook of Learning Sciences and Johns Hopkins University, we expect to produce life and educational benefits for students through several mechanisms:

• Connecting academics with real-world examples, a core goal of the program, improves student learning
• Project-based education improves learning outcomes
• Positive relationships with adults from the community, such as the mentors and tutors available through the program, can significantly increase academic performance

Overall, Community Partners in Education offers research-backed mechanisms for improving students’ educational and life outcomes, and with support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation, we will be able to bring the Community Partners in Education program and its benefits to all students in our district.

Project Title: Children’s Services to Independence
Project Description:

Children’s Services to Independence (CSTI) goal is for children to participate in critical rehabilitation, recreational, and education activities to maximize their development and self-sufficiency. CSTI currently serves 97 blind and visually impaired (BVI)children under 13 years old and their parents, who live in Broward County remotely due to the pandemic social distancing measures. LHOB’s Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program supports 42 children whose ages range from birth through 5 years old. The remaining 55 are children, ages 6 – 13 obtain services through LHOB’s KIDS (Keys to Independence) Program.

Our staff conducts assessments and creates an Individual Education Plan for each client. Babies and toddlers learn how to use all their senses (hearing, touch, taste, smell, proprioceptive) and their remaining vision. Play therapy activities include addressing cognitive skills, communication, using assistive technology, and compensatory skills. Also, instructors teach personal care, socialization skills, and fine/gross motor skills.

Older children, ages 6 – 13, participate in year-round programming during non-school days, Saturdays, and summer months. Activities enable children to learn safe travel skills, age-appropriate cooking and self-care techniques, Braille, computers and adaptive communication devices, and polite social interaction and self-advocacy. Case managers and instructors provide parents with information and support available resources not available at LHOB. Our agency remains open remotely through video conference lessons and social distance activities. Specifically, our staff helps families adjust to distance learning and provides additional materials necessary to study online for children.

Children in CSTI typically have multiple handicapping conditions. Therefore, BVI children are often not in the BCPS Program designated for the Visually Impaired. CSTI fills the gap to ensure these children achieve academic and life success. Services include equipment necessary for educational and social progression. CSTI curriculum also gives children access and opportunities to improve and advance their Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics skills (STEAM).

Project Title: Children’s Cancer Navigation
Project Description:

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments and doctor visits. Their parents struggle to analyze overwhelming amounts of information to achieve the best outcome for their child. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties and procedures. Low-income and non-English speaking families face greater obstacles to achieving positive outcomes due to language barriers.

Although cancer care and survival rates have vastly improved over the years, it comes with a steep price. Even families fortunate to have some form of health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, prescriptions costs, and innumerable out-of-pocket and un-covered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis and on the verge of homelessness. A study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that families with a child stricken with cancer were 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy, as average treatment costs can easily reach $100,000 or more EACH YEAR their child remains in treatment.

The 3rd largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida live in Palm Beach County. Consequently, 70% of our clients are children. Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope (CAHH) strongly advocates for each child throughout treatment and beyond. We work collaboratively with the child’s family, medical team and through outreach to local, state, and national resources to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education and support is critical and has been shown to increase quality of life AND overall chance of recovery and survival. In 2020 we served 1,000 clients, 70% being children.

Project Title: Gabriel’s House Summer Program
Project Description:

Gabriel’s House (GH) is a Christian based (non-denominational) afterschool program that offers parents/guardians of at risk PreK-5th graders a safe, loving and nurturing afterschool environment for their children. Enrichment opportunities and activities offered encourage healthy mental, physical and spiritual growth in the children we serve in Duncan, Comanche and Empire. Admission to Gabriel’s House is based on need.
GH has served children who are on the spectrum, dyslexic, parents speak another language, single parent household, parent(s) incarcerated, in the foster care system, raised by grandparents and on political asylum.
During the school year, the children are fed a snack and dinner every night, but what about those children during the summer? Some do without food and have no supervision which leads to risky behaviors. For some of the children, GH is a safe haven from home. Because of the safety and welfare of the children are of upmost importance, GH will offer a new summer program where these needs can be met. Children will be fed lunch and a snack daily. Some children will not have transportation, therefore, GH will team up with local churches to supply rides to and from home. Churches will also sponsor a week of activities like Bible School. The children would have weekly field trips such as to the splash pad, museum, park, etc. They would also get art lessons, cardio drumming, cooking classes and other enrichment activities. Staff who work during the school year would be utilized in this program keeping the only consistency some have in their lives.

Project Title: Career Pathways to Independence
Project Description:

The Village is a 40-bed group home facility that opened its doors in May, 2004 to provide a safe haven for abused youth. Youth, ages 13 to 17, are removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect and/or abandonment by the State. The youth are placed at the Village for a few days, months, or sometimes, even years. Many youth will “age out of the system” with us at age 18. The Career Pathways to independence teaches youth, ages 13 – 17, to participate in life skill development and career preparation training. The youth are engaged in community based internships with local businesses and agencies. Participating youth receive a career and interest assessment to provide an understanding of talents, interests, personality and skills in order to establish compatible future work areas and fields of interest. All youth attend seminars on a variety of career and independent living topics, attend weekly focus groups, and are provided with an opportunity to participate in three different work experiences: job shadowing, internship, and/or part-time employment lasting one to three weeks. In addition, participants are provided with an opportunity to open a bank account and learn how to manage it. The community need addressed is the lack of jobs, interpersonal skills and problem solving skills/trainings/opportunities for at-risk youth, compounded with the tragic statistics that abused youth are facing: Abused youth are nine times more likely to consider or attempt suicide which is the leading cause of death for children ages 5-18 years, and abused youth are nine times more likely to become involved in criminal activity and human trafficking.
