Project Title: Equipment for Physical Development
Project Description:

St. Joan of Arc Catholic School is respectfully requesting $10,000 in support of the project, Equipment for Physical Development. Late 2000, St. Joan of Arc was the recipient of a $25,000 donation to support the purchasing of playground equipment. Unfortunately, time, heavy use and Florida’s climate has taken a toll on the necessary equipment causing it to become dangerous for children’s use. As a result the School has had to make other arrangements for the children’s physical development, which has limited the physical development of the children.

Physical development includes activities for movement so that children use their excess energy, while giving them a chance to develop gross and find motor skills. As well, it gives children the change to learn new things and increasing their social skills. Physical development also contributes to a child’s mental and physical health and overall well being.

According to the Child Development Institute, 75% of a child’s brain develops after birth. To aid in this development, physical play is essential as it allows the child develop connections between the nerve cells and brain. As this occurs, a child’s fine and gross motor skills develop and improve, as does their social skills, personal awareness, language, creativity and problem solving skills.

The health benefits of physical development increase with regular play. According to the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center, being physically active promotes early brain development and learning in children. It reduces the risk of developing health conditions like coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes obesity and other conditions.

Because St. Joan is dedicated to impacting the lives of children through a stellar academic environment, coupled with the importance for children to have physical development through play, St. Joan is hopeful in this request for support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation.

Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Road to Reading
Project Description:

The Reading Connection respectfully requests a grant of $5,000 from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our literacy programs for at-risk children and families in Washington DC metro area. Our five literacy programs (Read-Alouds, Book Club, Reading Family Workshops, Literacy Advocacy Trainings and Launching Young Readers) offer a suite of services that begins when children enter emergency housing or become clients of our partner social service agencies. Our mission is to improve the lives of at-risk children and families by helping them create and sustain literacy-rich environments and motivation for reading. TRC accomplishes this mission by: deploying trained volunteers who read aloud to children at homeless shelters, transitional housing sites, affordable housing complexes, domestic violence safe houses, and several local social service agencies; providing kids with free, new books to keep; providing workshops that help parents encourage reading and literacy development at home; and training social service agency and early-education professionals about the critical importance of early literacy experiences for those they serve.

History: In 1989, a group of educators from the Greater Washington Reading Council noted that their students who lived in a local homeless shelter faced huge obstacles when starting school and learning to read. Council volunteers launched a service project at the shelter that has evolved into what today is The Reading Connection, which served over 1,000 vulnerable children and distributed close to 14,000 books last year.

Outcomes: Other accomplishments from FY15 include:
• 96% of parents reported that their children are more interested in reading;
• 96% of parents reported that TRC has helped them make reading a part of their family’s daily routine;
• 99% of parents reported that they feel more confident sharing books with their child;
• 93% of partner-agency staff reported increased confidence in talking with their parent-clients about sharing books with their children.

Project Title: Kids Cultural Connection
Project Description:

As the only NAEYC accredited Jewish educational program in South Palm Beach County, we are unique! Our developmentally-appropriate curriculum promotes a healthy self-image for children in a very warm and welcoming environment. Our teaching staff is dedicated to strengthening the lives of our students through the transmission of key values. Our staff represents a wide variety of diverse educational backgrounds, but they focus on empowering and building the confidence of our future young leaders to become engaged contributors of our community.
Why are we seeking this assistance? Our goal is to enrich our children’s lives by having them experience a new way of hearing and feeling music. The Kids Cultural Connection, in which we are seeking assistance for, will take have a fall and spring program. The fall program will consist of a traveling museum exhibit that will be culturally enriching to the community. The spring program will showcase the Symphonia of Boca Raton , in which the community will have the opportunity to hear the orchestra play. After there will be a “Petting Zoo” in which the children get a chance to touch the instruments. This is a remarkable way for the students to not only fall in love with the music that is so culturally new to them, but they will get a chance to touch and play an instrument they might have only seen in a book!
We at the Ruth and Edward Taubman Early Childhood Center want to help grow and nurture our children, instilling a love of culture through expanding their musical and historical palate. The time for learning excellence is now and we would like to help our children grow experientially, ultimately benefitting both the school and the overall South Palm Beach community.

We would welcome the opportunity to partner with Hermanowski Family Foundation to empower and support our children at The Ruth and Edward Taubman Early Childhood Center.

Thank you for considering this letter of inquiry.

Project Title: Children Fingerprint Identifcation Project
Project Description:

Did you know that every 4 seconds a child goes missing in the United States? In order to fulfill our mission, Missing Children Global Network provides an array of services to the family and the missing child at no charge to them. Our investigation unit has conducted several investigations to locate and recover missing children. At the moment, our non-profit organization is requesting grant money to implement a fingerprint scan system to facilitate the process of locating missing children in the state of Florida. For this project, we plan to collaborate with schools and churches in the community to be able to take a live scan and picture of all the children. This information will be given to Law Enforcement and Families to be used in cases of disappearance. Since children’s fingerprint are not registered anywhere, this project will aid law enforcement and our organization to identify and locate deceased as well as living children that have gone missing for hours or even days upon months.

Project Title: P.A.C.E \”Preventing Abuse of Children through Education
Project Description:

Sexual abuse and exploitation is the single most prevalent health concern facing children today (C. Townsand, 2013). According to the CDC, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually exploited before the age of 18. Annually, more than 60,000 cases of child sexual abuse are reported nationwide, which is only a fraction of the incidents that occur since most victims never report. The effects of sexual abuse extend far beyond childhood. Sexual abuse robs children of their childhood and creates a loss of trust, feelings of confusion and guilt and self-destructive behavior. It can lead to mental illness, depression and anxiety, identity confusion, loss of self-esteem, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, elopement, suicidal behaviors and other serious emotional problems. It can also lead to difficulty with intimate relationships later in life. According to the CDC there are also long-term issues resulting from sexual abuse including higher rates of chronic health conditions and mental illness, higher rates of unemployment, instability, domestic violence, chronic substance abuse and a shortened life span. However, 95% of child sexual abuse and exploitation is preventable with education according to the Child Molestation Research Institute. KidSafe programs break the cycle of silence surrounding abuse and provide education to children, parents and professionals with a proactive approach. “KidSafe for Kids” 8-week, 30 minute curriculum for children in grades PreK-4 – 5th grade. Children learn important safety skills and receive the Safe and Smart book series; “My Body is Special and Belongs to Me!” and “Jack Teaches his Friends to be KidSafe!” Parent Seminars – These seminars increase awareness, deliver knowledge and provide skills to parents to keep kids safe. We dispel the myth of stranger danger, educate about “red flag behaviors” of adults, help parents recognize “red flag behaviors” of children in need, educate on reporting procedures, provide strategies for communication with children and teach the KidSafe Language of Safety. This seminar provides the tools to talk to children about sensitive topics in a comfortable natural manner. Teacher/Counselor/Staff Workshop- The workshops cover how to recognize children at risk for abuse, professional protocol, mandated reporting procedures and how to respond to disclosure. KidSafe educates on how to reinforce the use of KidSafe Prevention skills at school, and much more. This professional development seminar empowers teachers with awareness and skills which can be integrated into their everyday classroom management to best keep children safe.
