Project Title: Equipment for Physical Development
Project Description:

St. Joan of Arc Catholic School is respectfully requesting $10,000 in support of the project, Equipment for Physical Development. Late 2000, St. Joan of Arc was the recipient of a $25,000 donation to support the purchasing of playground equipment. Unfortunately, time, heavy use and Florida’s climate has taken a toll on the necessary equipment causing it to become dangerous for children’s use. As a result the School has had to make other arrangements for the children’s physical development, which has limited the physical development of the children.

Physical development includes activities for movement so that children use their excess energy, while giving them a chance to develop gross and find motor skills. As well, it gives children the change to learn new things and increasing their social skills. Physical development also contributes to a child’s mental and physical health and overall well being.

According to the Child Development Institute, 75% of a child’s brain develops after birth. To aid in this development, physical play is essential as it allows the child develop connections between the nerve cells and brain. As this occurs, a child’s fine and gross motor skills develop and improve, as does their social skills, personal awareness, language, creativity and problem solving skills.

The health benefits of physical development increase with regular play. According to the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center, being physically active promotes early brain development and learning in children. It reduces the risk of developing health conditions like coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes obesity and other conditions.

Because St. Joan is dedicated to impacting the lives of children through a stellar academic environment, coupled with the importance for children to have physical development through play, St. Joan is hopeful in this request for support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation.
