Project Title: A Living Song: 50 Years With the MCC
Project Description:

MCC respectfully requests funding from the Hermanowski Foundation for general support for its 50th anniversary season.

Established in 1965, MCC continues to transform the lives of South Florida youth, developing their musical and non-musical skills, and garnering them the praise of music professionals and audiences around the globe. Using choral music as the medium, children participating in the MCC develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be proficient practicing artists and responsible individuals.

The organization offers three advancing levels of participation, a scholarship program for youth who otherwise would not be able to participate in the ensemble, and a free community choral outreach project that brings MCC training to low-income and underserved communities. Additionally, MCC presents free and ticketed concerts, youth singing workshops, free music teacher development workshops, and free community sing-alongs.

While centered on performance, programs also foster life edifying skills, cultural awareness, social responsibility, and encourage youth to collaborate, believe, and achieve. MCC’s approach focuses on developing the skills of creativity, focused-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and respectful communication. Each child comes to the MCC from different backgrounds and with varying skill sets, but it is here where they learn that there is no greater reward than that of giving their personal best, and this approach promotes an excellence that radiates onto all part of their lives.

MCC has prepared children to appear and record with artists in a wide variety of musical settings, the likes of; the Cleveland Orchestra, at Super Bowl with Queen Latifah, André Rieu, Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada, Raul Di Blasio, Florida Grand Opera, the former Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, Master Chorale of South Florida, and Festival Miami. As cultural ambassadors, MCC has performed in Argentina, Brazil, Italy, South Africa, Great Britain, Austria and the Czech Republic, in addition to appearances throughout the US.

Project Title: Marie Wasie Early beginnings Preschool
Project Description:

The Marie Wasie Early Beginnings Preschool provides essential services to a drastically growing population of young disabled children in our community. Over 60% of the children come from low income households. In recognition of research based significance of the first five years of brain development, the educational program of the Marie Wasie Early Beginnings Preschool provides Early Intervention services including Occupational, Speech, Physical and Music therapy for children with developmental disabilities at the earliest age possible. Research has shown that reaching children at this early age, helps to maximize their potential and allows them to reach the benchmarks of typically developing children at the same chronological age.

The program focuses on activities designed to develop cognitive, motor, language/communication, self-help and social-emotional skills while encouraging independence and a positive self-esteem. The preschool staff is able to address these issues by providing a variety of services to the children. The specific goals are to work daily with each child using different methodologies of therapeutic intervention in order to maximize their potential. The timetable is ongoing reaching the child at the earliest opportunity in order to implement therapies and introduce concepts early enough in a child’s life to make an impact. The therapies are ongoing and applied daily.

UCP of Broward County has successfully provided early intervention services for children 3-6 years since 1973 when the preschool program opened in Fort Lauderdale. Children with cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome and developmental delays have thrived and excelled. Upon graduation, many of the children have transitioned into a regular public school setting with typically developing peers.

Funding from the Hermanowski Foundation will assist in the continuation of programs and services provided throughout the community addressing the significant needs of an underserved population.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: 24-hour Crisis Counseling Hotline
Project Description:

The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) was founded in 1973 by a group of dedicated volunteers from the Cambridge Women’s Center. As the first rape crisis center in the Massachusetts, BARCC pioneered a movement to end sexual violence, and has maintained the dual mission of survivor-centered services and social change. BARCC began in a room just large enough to hold a desk, telephone, and a single mattress so counselors could stay overnight. At the time, our main service was a 24-hour hotline, which continues to grow today.

Sexual violence is an urgent problem. Over 17 million women and nearly 3 million men report experiencing sexual violence. In Massachusetts, 4,418 people are sexually assaulted each year, which is equal to 12 assaults each day. Youth are at particularly high risk. Those between the ages of 16 and 19 are nearly four times as likely as adults to experience attempted or completed rape. One quarter of college-age women report experiencing sexual assault during their college career, often delaying or even derailing their education.

BARCC’s 24-hour crisis counseling hotline is staffed by trained volunteer rape crisis counselors. Survivors have described the hotline as a “sanctuary” where they can expect a knowledgeable and caring person to listen and provide support and referrals without judgment. The hotline is available to survivors over the age of 12, family members, partners, friends, and providers.

Since last July, 3,032 people have called BARCC’s hotline looking for hope, referrals, or someone to listen. This is a 10% increase in demand from the previous year. Of those callers, 25% were looking for help with child sexual abuse or adolescent sexual assault. No matter the time or volume of calls, our hotline is always available with accurate information and compassionate people ready to listen.
