Project Title: Marie Wasie Early beginnings Preschool
Project Description:
The Marie Wasie Early Beginnings Preschool provides essential services to a drastically growing population of young disabled children in our community. Over 60% of the children come from low income households. In recognition of research based significance of the first five years of brain development, the educational program of the Marie Wasie Early Beginnings Preschool provides Early Intervention services including Occupational, Speech, Physical and Music therapy for children with developmental disabilities at the earliest age possible. Research has shown that reaching children at this early age, helps to maximize their potential and allows them to reach the benchmarks of typically developing children at the same chronological age.
The program focuses on activities designed to develop cognitive, motor, language/communication, self-help and social-emotional skills while encouraging independence and a positive self-esteem. The preschool staff is able to address these issues by providing a variety of services to the children. The specific goals are to work daily with each child using different methodologies of therapeutic intervention in order to maximize their potential. The timetable is ongoing reaching the child at the earliest opportunity in order to implement therapies and introduce concepts early enough in a child’s life to make an impact. The therapies are ongoing and applied daily.
UCP of Broward County has successfully provided early intervention services for children 3-6 years since 1973 when the preschool program opened in Fort Lauderdale. Children with cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome and developmental delays have thrived and excelled. Upon graduation, many of the children have transitioned into a regular public school setting with typically developing peers.
Funding from the Hermanowski Foundation will assist in the continuation of programs and services provided throughout the community addressing the significant needs of an underserved population.
