Project Title: 24-hour Crisis Counseling Hotline
Project Description:
The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) was founded in 1973 by a group of dedicated volunteers from the Cambridge Women’s Center. As the first rape crisis center in the Massachusetts, BARCC pioneered a movement to end sexual violence, and has maintained the dual mission of survivor-centered services and social change. BARCC began in a room just large enough to hold a desk, telephone, and a single mattress so counselors could stay overnight. At the time, our main service was a 24-hour hotline, which continues to grow today.
Sexual violence is an urgent problem. Over 17 million women and nearly 3 million men report experiencing sexual violence. In Massachusetts, 4,418 people are sexually assaulted each year, which is equal to 12 assaults each day. Youth are at particularly high risk. Those between the ages of 16 and 19 are nearly four times as likely as adults to experience attempted or completed rape. One quarter of college-age women report experiencing sexual assault during their college career, often delaying or even derailing their education.
BARCC’s 24-hour crisis counseling hotline is staffed by trained volunteer rape crisis counselors. Survivors have described the hotline as a “sanctuary” where they can expect a knowledgeable and caring person to listen and provide support and referrals without judgment. The hotline is available to survivors over the age of 12, family members, partners, friends, and providers.
Since last July, 3,032 people have called BARCC’s hotline looking for hope, referrals, or someone to listen. This is a 10% increase in demand from the previous year. Of those callers, 25% were looking for help with child sexual abuse or adolescent sexual assault. No matter the time or volume of calls, our hotline is always available with accurate information and compassionate people ready to listen.
