Project Title: STARS and Teen Leadership Program
Project Description:

Our program serves at-risk, disadvantaged, children and teens during OUT OF SCHOOL TIME (afterschool, school breaks and summer). The vast majority of children live in families at or below the federal poverty level. Research suggests that this population is 6 times more likely to drop out of school than wealthy children and only have a 30% chance of graduating from high school, costing the community excessively in many ways. Our ultimate goal is to improve the high school graduation rate and prepare youth for college and/or work. Youth are provided life skills training in addition to the unique and integrated curriculum that Milagro is known for. The four main components of our programs include:
• Cultural Arts Education – with an emphasis on visual and performing arts, taught by master artists. Students are provided an introduction to the arts through general instruction in drama, music, dance and mixed media (painting, drawing, and sculpture) through professionally applied techniques.
• Living Values – is a values-based education program endorsed by the United Nations to help children develop key personal and social characteristics including: Peace, Love, Respect, Responsibility, Happiness, Cooperation, Humility, Honesty, Tolerance, Simplicity, and Unity. Students participating in this program increase their self esteem, their ability to accept all human-kind, and their capability to make appropriate choices when faced with conflict or adversity.
• Academic Enrichment – children at the highest risk of school failure are provided with one-on-one academic support by staff and mentors/volunteers to ensure school success. Teens are offered tutoring by certified teachers, as well as SAT preparation. 96% of the children who come to us (at imminent risk of school failure) are promoted to the next grade each year. We are confident that this will translate into an increased high school graduation rate.

Requested Amount: $7,500

Project Title: Strong Women, Strong Girls Capacity-Building Project
Project Description:

This request seeks funding to build SWSG program capacity to engage 600 at-risk girls and 60 college mentors in high quality after-school educational programming in the 2012-2013 program year. SWSG provides at-risk, low income girls with a free, after-school mentoring program that helps them build the academic and social emotional skills necessary for future success. SWSG currently engages over 350 diverse girls in grades 3-5 throughout Miami-Dade County. SWSG engages these girls in a unique afterschool model that uses the proven benefits of the study of contemporary and historical female role models, skill-building activities, and relationships with mentors. SWSG pairs groups of 10-12 girls with 3 college women mentors, giving girls the opportunity to build meaningful skills, interact with positive role models, and build strong relationships with consistent adults. Programming is offered to girls one afternoon per week for 1.5 hrs on-site at their elementary school or community center, from October until May.

During the first semester of SWSG programming, girls participate in the “Countdown to Success Skills” curriculum. Each lesson focuses on a skill that research has identified to be essential to girls’ healthy social emotional development, including critical thinking, goal setting, and good communication. The SWSG program culminates with the Service Project Curriculum during the second half of programming, allowing girls to collectively identify an issue affecting their community, proactively develop a solution, and mobilize to create impact. Afterschool Alliance reports that service learning opportunities lead to “better students and a brighter future.” Currently, there are 26,000 girls eligible for SWSG program in Miami-Dade, based on age and income criteria. SWSG seeks to more comprehensively address this overwhelming need by engaging 600 girls in the 2012-2013 program year.

Project Title: Summer Youth Program
Project Description:

With support from the Foundation, the Center will add to our already existing community service programs for youth by establishing a two day summer program for high school students. The program will be open to 25 high school students on Long Island, identified by their district. The two day program would begin with an introduction to the law and legal system, followed by trial skills training and exercises. At the conclusion of the program, students would put their newly learned skills to the test with an intramural competition. While the overall program would be developed and supervised by a Hofstra faculty member, five Hofstra Law students would each lead small group workshops, giving each high school student individualized attention and creating opportunities for mentorship.

While the New York State Bar Association does host a summer mock trial program for high school students, the program takes place in Lake George, New York. Transportation costs prohibit students from Hempstead and other impoverished communities on Long Island to participate. Programs exist in New York City as well but the Hofstra program would be the first available to students on Long Island.

The first summer program would take place in 2013. The 2012-2013 academic year would be used for planning purposes, outreach to school districts, and marketing to students and parents. We would also need to train the five law student group leaders.
