Project Title: Strong Women, Strong Girls Capacity-Building Project
Project Description:

This request seeks funding to build SWSG program capacity to engage 600 at-risk girls and 60 college mentors in high quality after-school educational programming in the 2012-2013 program year. SWSG provides at-risk, low income girls with a free, after-school mentoring program that helps them build the academic and social emotional skills necessary for future success. SWSG currently engages over 350 diverse girls in grades 3-5 throughout Miami-Dade County. SWSG engages these girls in a unique afterschool model that uses the proven benefits of the study of contemporary and historical female role models, skill-building activities, and relationships with mentors. SWSG pairs groups of 10-12 girls with 3 college women mentors, giving girls the opportunity to build meaningful skills, interact with positive role models, and build strong relationships with consistent adults. Programming is offered to girls one afternoon per week for 1.5 hrs on-site at their elementary school or community center, from October until May.

During the first semester of SWSG programming, girls participate in the “Countdown to Success Skills” curriculum. Each lesson focuses on a skill that research has identified to be essential to girls’ healthy social emotional development, including critical thinking, goal setting, and good communication. The SWSG program culminates with the Service Project Curriculum during the second half of programming, allowing girls to collectively identify an issue affecting their community, proactively develop a solution, and mobilize to create impact. Afterschool Alliance reports that service learning opportunities lead to “better students and a brighter future.” Currently, there are 26,000 girls eligible for SWSG program in Miami-Dade, based on age and income criteria. SWSG seeks to more comprehensively address this overwhelming need by engaging 600 girls in the 2012-2013 program year.
