Project Title: STARS and Teen Leadership Program
Project Description:

Our program serves at-risk, disadvantaged, children and teens during OUT OF SCHOOL TIME (afterschool, school breaks and summer). The vast majority of children live in families at or below the federal poverty level. Research suggests that this population is 6 times more likely to drop out of school than wealthy children and only have a 30% chance of graduating from high school, costing the community excessively in many ways. Our ultimate goal is to improve the high school graduation rate and prepare youth for college and/or work. Youth are provided life skills training in addition to the unique and integrated curriculum that Milagro is known for. The four main components of our programs include:
• Cultural Arts Education – with an emphasis on visual and performing arts, taught by master artists. Students are provided an introduction to the arts through general instruction in drama, music, dance and mixed media (painting, drawing, and sculpture) through professionally applied techniques.
• Living Values – is a values-based education program endorsed by the United Nations to help children develop key personal and social characteristics including: Peace, Love, Respect, Responsibility, Happiness, Cooperation, Humility, Honesty, Tolerance, Simplicity, and Unity. Students participating in this program increase their self esteem, their ability to accept all human-kind, and their capability to make appropriate choices when faced with conflict or adversity.
• Academic Enrichment – children at the highest risk of school failure are provided with one-on-one academic support by staff and mentors/volunteers to ensure school success. Teens are offered tutoring by certified teachers, as well as SAT preparation. 96% of the children who come to us (at imminent risk of school failure) are promoted to the next grade each year. We are confident that this will translate into an increased high school graduation rate.
