Project Title: Weekend Miracles Virginia
Project Description:

Weekend Miracles Virginia (WMVA) is an innovative community-based program that connects older youth in foster care with caring adults who can become mentors, advocates, and in many cases permanent families. Implemented by Kidsave in partnership with the Virginia Department of Social Services, the program focuses on youth ages 10–17 who are at risk of growing up without permanent family connections.

Unlike traditional recruitment approaches, Weekend Miracles uses engaging monthly community events where youth and adults meet through shared activities such as sports, art, cooking, and volunteer projects. These relaxed settings allow relationships to develop naturally over time, giving youth a voice and choice in forming connections with adults who show genuine interest in their lives and futures.

The program addresses a critical need. Youth who age out of foster care without supportive adult relationships face significantly higher risks of homelessness, unemployment, and poor health outcomes. Research consistently shows that even one stable adult relationship can dramatically improve a young person’s long-term success.

In 2026, Weekend Miracles Virginia will expand its work across Northern and Central Virginia, serving approximately **60 youth in foster care and engaging more than 100 adults** as mentors, prospective adoptive parents, or supportive community members. The program will host two connection events per month, along with orientations and trainings designed to prepare adults for meaningful, trauma-informed relationships with youth.

Kidsave will also conduct robust outreach to recruit and prepare adults, with goals of reaching 1,600 potential volunteers, hosting 150 orientations, and generating 60 program applications from prospective participants.

Through this work, Weekend Miracles Virginia helps youth build lasting relationships that provide stability, encouragement, and opportunity as they transition into adulthood. By strengthening connections between vulnerable youth and caring adults, the program helps ensure that young people leaving foster care do not face the future alone.
