Project Title: Class of 2022 College Mentor Program
Project Description:

BRYC humbly and gratefully requests $10,000 to support its Class of 2022 College Mentor Program. BRYC seeks funding to recruit, train, and continually support its College Mentors, the volunteers who serve as personal guides to our Senior Fellows throughout the college application and financial aid processes. The Hermanowski Family Foundation’s support for the 2021-2022 school year would enable BRYC to provide 75 Senior Fellows with the tools and guidance they need to gain admission to the four-year colleges of their choice with less than $5,500 per year in student loan debt.

There are many high-achieving, low-income students in our region’s public high schools who have the ability to get into and graduate from college, strengthening our community both economically and civically. But they don’t. Most of our Fellows are East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) students and identify as Black and economically disadvantaged. EBRPSS is a perennially struggling school system in which 84 percent of 42,000 students are Black and live in poverty, and 73 percent of low-income Black high schoolers earn diplomas. Far fewer attend college. Even fewer graduate: 19 percent of Black adults aged 25+ in East Baton Rouge Parish hold bachelor’s degrees.

Baton Rouge’s educational need is unconscionable. BRYC doesn’t intend to be all things to all students; we exhaustively serve rising/current high schoolers who: 1) have 3.0+ GPAs and 2) are Pell Grant-eligible.

Total Project Budget: $142,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The project for which we seek support from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will take place during Fiscal Year 2022 (2021-2022 school year). As such most of the funding listed below is technically pending. However, given BRYC’s high donor retention rate, we are confident that most, if not all, of these funders will renew their financial support. Finally, please note that this is not a comprehensive projection of BRYC’s Fiscal Year 2022 income sources, but rather a projection of just the funders who we expect to support the College Mentor Program specifically.
