Project Title: Growing Bright Futures: Volunteer Advocacy for Abused and Neglected Children
Project Description:
For 30 years, Chesterfield CASA has served children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Our mission is to advocate for the best interests of children involved in the juvenile court system so that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe, stable, and permanent home.
Our core program focuses on recruiting, training, and supervising community volunteers to serve as Court-Appointed Special Advocates for children in foster care due to abuse or neglect. Once trained and sworn in by the court, each volunteer advocate is assigned to a child or sibling group, at no cost to the family, and remains involved throughout the duration of the case, providing a consistent, caring presence during what is often a confusing and uncertain time.
Under the supervision and support of professional staff, advocates build trusting relationships with the children they serve through regular visits. They also gather information from parents, caregivers, social workers, service providers, and others involved in the child’s life to gain a full understanding of the child’s circumstances. Advocates synthesize this information into objective reports and recommendations submitted to the court, helping judges make informed decisions about safety, services, and permanent placement. In addition, advocates monitor court orders and case progress to ensure services are provided, needs are addressed, and the child’s well-being remains the priority throughout the life of the case.
In 2025, Chesterfield CASA served 152 children across 82 families. Our advocates provide reliable information and monitor progress throughout each case, which helps reduce time spent in the child welfare and juvenile court systems and promotes decisions that lead to safe, stable, and permanent homes. This individualized advocacy ensures that children who might otherwise feel invisible are seen, heard, and given the opportunities needed to thrive.
