Project Title: Camp Prov for Children with Special Needs
Project Description:

Summer camp is an annual tradition many children look forward to, but for children with special needs, their options for summer activities are limited. They need camps that will accommodate their complex needs for inclusion, socialization and communication. As a result, Camp Prov was started in 1996 by parents who wanted their children with special needs to have a fun camp experience.

This year, Camp Prov will offer weeklong day camp for 200 children, ages 4-9, who have special needs, and their siblings, ages 4-7 (40 children per week for five weeks). Disabilities typically include autism, seizure disorder, brain injuries, cerebral palsy, and sensory disorders. The total Camp Prov season lasts five weeks, from July to August each summer, at Forest Park in Everett, WA, and will mainly be held outdoors.

The camp will have two sessions per day (morning and afternoon). The 22 unit leaders, many of them former teen volunteers, are generally college students looking forward to careers in education and healthcare, including medicine, nursing and therapies.

Unit leaders and volunteers, ages 14 and up, participate one-on-one with campers through their activities, including arts and crafts, sensory play, socialization activities, music, singing, signing, story-telling, nature activities, dance and movement.

The cost per child this year will be $620. Typically, 39% of the children attending Camp Prov require a full scholarship, and we anticipate the need to be greater this year due to the economic impact of COVID. This grant would provide for 16 scholarships.

The children develop and learn how to manage sensory and behavioral challenges, transition issues, as well as speech and physical disorders. This improves their ability to develop relationships, acquire skills, and act appropriately to meet their needs. Most importantly, they have fun, and make friends and memories to last a lifetime. Thank you!
