Project Title: The Edge Urban Arts
Project Description:
The Urban Arts program at The Edge Urban Fellowship is a multi-site youth development initiative that integrates arts education, youth leadership development, and mentorship to serve students across greater Grand Rapids .
The project includes four core components.
1. Hip Hop Dance Immersion provides weekly in-school instruction at 6 elementary schools currently serving 900 students, with expansion planned to 9 schools reaching approximately 1,200 students. Professional dance instructors teach during the school day, ensuring equitable access to high-quality arts education. Scholarships are available for gifted students who wish to train at dance studio.
2. In partnership with the 17th Circuit Court, the LEAD (Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Accountability, and Dance) program will serve probation-referred youth ages 12–18 in 8-week cohorts meeting twice weekly. LEAD addresses criminogenic risk factors by building discipline, impulse control, teamwork, family responsibility, and future-oriented thinking.
3. Urban Arts Afterschool serves 60 alternative education students weekly at Covenant High School and Secondary Learning Academy, with potential expansion to additional sites. Industry-level artists teach hip hop dance, entrepreneurship, lyricism, and visual arts, helping students re-engage academically while building creative and career skills.
4. The Pop Out is a weekly gathering where middle and high school students develop artistic voice and personal purpose within a supportive community.
Collectively, Urban Arts transforms children and youth by combining consistent mentorship, structured arts training, leadership development, and real performance opportunities into one integrated pathway.
