Project Title: Uplift Initiative
Project Description:

The Uplift Initiative is HopeFor Learning’s early grade mentoring and support program designed to strengthen academic success, social-emotional development, and stability for children in Title 1 elementary schools across Metro Richmond. The program focuses on students in the early grades, when attitudes toward learning and behavior patterns are first developing, providing consistent mentoring and encouragement during these formative years. Trained mentors meet regularly with students to build positive relationships, reinforce confidence, and support healthy emotional and behavioral development.

In addition to mentoring, the Uplift Initiative takes a holistic approach by addressing barriers that prevent children from fully engaging in school. Many of the students served come from under-resourced households where access to food, clothing, school supplies, and other basic needs may be limited. Through partnerships with school counselors, social workers, Community in Schools site coordinators, and McKinney-Vento liaisons, students are identified and connected with the resources they need to achieve stability and remain focused on learning.

The Uplift Initiative operates on a “preventive mentoring” model that emphasizes early intervention before academic or behavioral challenges become more serious. By strengthening literacy confidence, improving classroom engagement, and fostering positive social skills, the program helps students build a strong foundation for long-term academic and personal success. Ultimately, the Uplift Initiative benefits not only individual students and families but also contributes to stronger schools and healthier communities.
