Project Title: Meet the Music
Project Description:
Meet the Music (MTM) is the flagship youth education program of Grand Vision Foundation, a San Pedro-based non-profit that engages the LA Harbor area through live music and cultural programming. Since 2009, MTM has provided equitable music education to elementary students by providing sequential, standards-based instruction during the school day. Led by Education Manager Sukari Reid-Glenn and a team of specialized teaching artists, MTM serves over 2,700 students annually through in-school courses, after-school STEAM enrichment, and participatory concerts.
Requested funding will support semester and year-long programming at Title I partner schools in San Pedro and Wilmington—communities heavily impacted by the industrialization of the Port of Los Angeles. This support sustains MTM’s "vertical alignment" model, which builds musical literacy across grade levels:
Roots of Music Program (RoMP): A 12-week curriculum for 3rd/4th graders introducing foundational concepts and multicultural traditions to foster empathy and global awareness.
Recorders in Schools: A 24-week instrumental program for 5th graders focusing on notation, technique, and ensemble performance.
Percussion Program: A flexible, culturally relevant curriculum for grades K-5 that builds teamwork and rhythmic proficiency.
LA Opera Partnership: A participatory production of German Opera Tales for 800 students, including teacher workshops and bus transportation.
MTM’s pedagogy is rooted in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and culturally responsive teaching. By mainstreaming "special day" students and providing professional development for classroom teachers, MTM ensures music becomes a tool for academic engagement and personal confidence. Success is measured through rigorous pre- and post-program evaluations aligned with arts standards, ensuring that every student develops the perseverance and creativity necessary for lifelong success.
