Project Title: AIM +1 Project
Project Description:
National research shows that Black high school graduates enroll in college at lower rates than their white peers, with only about 56 % enrolling immediately after graduation compared to higher rates for other groups. Black students complete post-secondary credentials at substantially lower rates, even six years after enrollment. Among those not enrolled, labor force participation is markedly lower. The AIM +1 Program expands AIM’s existing engagement with recent graduates into a structured transition support program for young adults ages 18–21 — one of the most underserved age groups in traditional youth services.
AIM +1 meets this transition gap with a holistic, individualized model that supports both postsecondary pathways and workforce readiness, recognizing that success is defined by each young adult’s goals. Our graduates require support in navigating all of life’s challenges after high school, not just the academic ones. Over 12 months, grant funds will support the following program elements:
Life Skills Labs: Sessions on financial literacy, time management, housing navigation, healthcare access, and self-advocacy.
Career & College Pathways: Structured supports including resume writing, interview preparation, FAFSA and admissions navigation, and employer engagement.
Mentorship Circles: Once per semester, structured small group mentorship with peers and trained adult mentors.
Individual Transition Coaching: Meetings focused on goal setting, accountability, academic/work plans, and overcoming barriers. All plans follow a structure that students are introduced to in 11th grade. This allows for a case management approach that supports our longitudinal model.
Emergency Stability Supports: Transportation stipends and resource access to reduce barriers to participation.
This project builds on existing engagement led by the College and Career Coordinator. AIM +1 plans to improve educational persistence, employment readiness, and stability for recent graduates. This model supports conscious growth and creates a durable framework for deepening AIM’s impact beyond high school.
