Project Title: MAUI GEMS Youth Mentorship & Leadership Cohort
Project Description:
While Hawaiʻi is globally recognized as a place of beauty and abundance, many local families face economic hardship that is often obscured by tourism imagery. Hawaiʻi consistently ranks among the highest cost-of-living states in the nation, and Maui youth are navigating rising housing instability, geographic isolation, and limited access to youth-centered services—conditions that disproportionately impact girls growing up in rural and economically vulnerable communities.
The MAUI GEMS (Girls Educational Mentorship & Self-Discovery) program is a structured, year-long mentorship and leadership development initiative serving girls ages 11–14 on Maui. The program builds social-emotional skills, healthy communication, boundary-setting, leadership confidence, and future planning capacity—protective factors shown to reduce long-term vulnerability and increase resilience.
Participants engage in facilitated workshops, guided discussions, mentorship sessions, and community-based experiences that strengthen identity, self-worth, and decision-making skills. Girls are paired with trained mentors and participate in experiential learning designed to cultivate leadership and personal accountability.
This request will support one full MAUI GEMS cohort serving approximately 20 girls over a 12-month period. Funds will cover program materials, facilitator support, mentor training resources, participant stipends, and evaluation.
By investing in early adolescence, MAUI GEMS strengthens protective factors at a critical developmental stage—equipping girls with the confidence and tools needed to navigate economic, social, and geographic challenges unique to island communities.
