Project Title: Peter Paul Youth Program: Empowering Children Through Education and Enrichment
Project Description:

Peter Paul RVA’s Youth Education Program provides free, year-round academic and enrichment programming for nearly 140 students in grades 1 through 12 in Richmond’s East End. The program ensures that children in one of the city’s most historically under-resourced communities have the tools, support, and confidence to succeed in school and beyond.

Students attend the After School Academy five days per week during the school year and the full-day Summer Promise Academy when school is out. Programming includes personalized literacy and math instruction aligned with Virginia’s Standards of Learning, small-group tutoring, homework assistance, and individualized learning plans. In 2024–2025, more than 70% of students improved in reading and math by year’s end.

Beyond academics, the Youth Program integrates arts, STEAM enrichment, social emotional learning, and culturally responsive teaching practices. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Science Museum of Virginia and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, students participate in hands-on learning experiences and field trips that expand their exposure to new environments and opportunities.

Nearly all youth in the program qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and many begin below grade level. Peter Paul provides a safe, structured environment with consistent mentorship from trusted adults who understand and reflect students’ lived experiences.

Peter Paul respectfully requests $10,000 from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support academic instruction, enrichment activities, field trips, transportation for educational experiences, nutritious meals and daily snacks, educational materials, and staffing to maintain low student-to-staff ratios. This investment will help ensure that children in Richmond’s East End have access to high-quality educational support and meaningful opportunities that empower them to reach their full potential.

Total Project Budget: $795,596
