Project Title: The Bowie State University Nutrition Lounge – 2026 Student Food Security & Wellness Operations
Project Description:

The Bowie State University Nutrition Lounge provides immediate food access and nutrition support to students experiencing food insecurity, many of whom are first-generation college students from Prince George’s County and surrounding communities.

Founded in 1865, Bowie State University is Maryland’s first Historically Black College and University (HBCU), with a longstanding mission of expanding educational access and opportunity for underserved populations. A significant portion of our student population is between the ages of 18–21, aligning directly with the Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to improving the lives of children and young adults.

Food insecurity remains a critical barrier to academic success, mental well-being, and student persistence. The Nutrition Lounge functions as a preventative health and welfare intervention—ensuring students have access to nutritious meals, snacks, and essential items that support focus, energy, and overall wellness.

Grant support will provide general operating assistance for food procurement, healthy meal supplies, and student-centered wellness support throughout the 2026 academic year. By stabilizing students’ basic needs, the Nutrition Lounge empowers young adults to remain enrolled, persist academically, and continue building leadership skills necessary for long-term success.

Through this support, the Hermanowski Foundation would directly impact hundreds of young adults navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood—ensuring that hunger does not hinder their educational progress or future potential.
