Project Title: NED Summer Lunch Program
Project Description:
New Era Detroit’s Lunch Program is a seasonal initiative ensuring all youth 18 and under has access to free, nutritious meals during summer months. From June to September, our organization will serve lunch for the duration of 3 hours Monday through Friday at our headquarters. This program intentionally fills the gap left when school-year meal services pause, addressing the heightened risk of food insecurity outside of school hours.
In 2025 alone, the Lunch Program served hundreds of youth, meeting a critical community need. Beyond providing balanced meals that support physical, the program creates a safe and welcoming environment where young people can gather, build relationships, and feel supported. Consistent access to food reduces the stress and instability many families face, allowing students to move out of survival mode. When basic needs are met, youth experience greater mental and emotional stability, positioning them to focus, grow, and thrive.
The lunch program also serves as a gateway to long-term opportunity. While onsite, students and families are connected to essential resources including career readiness initiatives, emergency assistance, child-care/after school programs, and mental health support. Participants are introduces to summer youth business programs that assists them into exploring skilled trades applicable across multiple industries.
By integrating nourishment with resource awareness and workforce development, NECC addresses immediate hunger while equipping youth with tools for building pathways toward economic stability and long term community impact. $10,000 in grant funding would cover essential meal services supplies such as fresh produce & proteins, food storage material, and utensils to ensure balanced healthy meals. Additionally the grant would help provide outreach materials and printed resource guides.
