Project Title: Rockwood Youth Baseball League
Project Description:
The Rockwood Youth Baseball League is a community-based youth sports program created by the Rockwood Youth Foundation to remove financial, cultural, and access barriers that prevent children and families from participating in organized baseball in the Rockwood community of Portland, Oregon.
The League provides free or low-cost registration, uniforms, equipment, and family support so that youth, many of whom are playing organized baseball for the first time, can safely and confidently participate. The program emphasizes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and family engagement while creating welcoming, values-driven team environments for children ages 6–12.
During the most recent season, more than 30 families participated, forming two teams (ages 6–9 and 9–12). Families and players practiced and played at community parks including Peninsula Park, Overlook Park, and Albina Park, introducing many families to safe, positive outdoor recreation spaces for the first time.
Beyond baseball instruction, the League connects families to academic advancement support and youth well-being resources, strengthening both on-field and off-field outcomes. The program is designed to foster healthy activity, improve confidence, build leadership skills, and strengthen family participation in community life.
By establishing a dedicated, neighborhood-based youth baseball league, Rockwood Youth Baseball League expands equitable access to sports, creates consistent opportunities for play and mentorship, and builds a sustainable pipeline for year-round youth development in one of the most diverse and under-resourced communities in East Multnomah County.
