Project Title: Childhood Activities for AZ Children in Foster Care
Project Description:
The Childhood Activities (CA) program of the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF) ensures that children and youth in Arizona foster care can experience the joy and normalcy of childhood. Established in 1984, this flagship program fills critical gaps left by limited state support (at an average of $15 per day across all placements) by funding opportunities that fall outside basic care.
Any child or youth (birth to age 21) who is a ward of the court in Arizona is eligible, including those in kinship placements, licensed foster homes, congregate care, tribal placements, and young adults who voluntarily remain in extended foster care. Funding supports activities such as sports registration and equipment, camps, tutoring, school field trips, bicycles, clothing, graduation expenses, music lessons, and more.
Participation in extracurricular and enrichment activities is proven to increase GPA, reduce dropout and delinquent behavior, and strengthen essential life skills such as persistence, independence, and positive peer relationships. For youth who have experienced trauma and instability, these opportunities foster confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
In 2025, AFFCF funded 5,593 activities for 2,671 children and youth statewide, totaling $1,000,127. Impact is carefully monitored through board review, annual audit, and caregiver surveys. Results show 95% reported improved self-esteem, 94% noted stronger connections with others, and 96% said youth learned a new skill or hobby.
As one youth shared, “Since I have been receiving your help" (funding for tutoring provided directly to the vendor), "I have improved in my reading and math one full grade level.” With support from the Hermanowski Foundation, AFFCF will continue ensuring that Arizona’s foster youth have access to the same enriching opportunities as their peers – opportunities to create joyful experiences and expand their futures.
