Project Title: Tools for Tomorrow: Empowering Homeless Children to Reach Their Full Potential
Project Description:
Deep Roots Family Homeless Shelter seeks support to expand its Children’s Enrichment Program for homeless and formerly homeless youth served through our campus in Cecil County, Maryland and our regional outreach in Northern Delaware and Southeastern Pennsylvania. Each year, approximately 50 children, from infancy through age 17, reside at or receive services from Deep Roots.
Children experiencing homelessness face trauma, academic disruption, and limited access to enrichment opportunities that most children have access to. These opportunities are essential for healthy development. While Deep Roots provides stable housing, food, case management, and adult self sufficiency services, funding for children’s enrichment and creative programming remains limited. As a result, many youth lack access to experiences that foster confidence, self expression, and long term success.
This project will provide structured educational and arts based programming designed to equip children with the tools they need to reach their full potential. Grant funds will be used to support transportation for educational field trips to museums and cultural institutions, purchase musical instruments and art supplies, and provide modest stipends for local artists and instructors. Programming will include music, visual arts, photography, and creative writing, based on participant interests.
Deep Roots staff will coordinate and supervise all activities, ensuring consistency, safety, and meaningful engagement. Alumni children who have transitioned into permanent housing will also be invited to participate, strengthening continuity of care and long term impact.
Through this project, children will gain exposure to new learning environments, develop creative skills, and build resilience, self confidence, and hope. By investing in their growth today, Deep Roots seeks to interrupt the cycle of homelessness and help vulnerable youth build brighter, more stable futures.
