Project Title: Dare to Dream®
Project Description:
The Dare to Dream program launched in an effort to meet the needs of foster children who have, or are on the verge of, aging out of the system and serves foster youth ages 15 to 22. Through this program, mentors are matched with foster youth to develop life and job skills to prepare them for independent living to include obtaining a driver’s license and bank account, obtaining a high school diploma and enrolling in some form of higher education, trade school, or branch of service. The focus is on building life skills and developing healthy adult relationships and role models to help prepare youth for aging out of care. Before being matched with a youth, mentors complete trauma informed training to build and support relationships with youth who have experienced trauma. Mentors meet with youth, at minimum, twice a month and work through our Dare to Dream manual as a guide for building rapport, engaging in activities, while also developing important life skills. The manual consists of ten milestones: building rapport, personal/professional goals, support systems/healthy relationships, physical fitness/meal prep, driver’s license, sex education/internet safety, interview/resume skills, money management/budget planning, college, trade school, or military, and finally, living arrangements. The manual also includes two extra milestones – self-esteem and public transportation. Each milestone includes a goal and application offering ideas for ways to achieve each goal. Case managers track progress in completing milestones, which will lead to the short-term goals of obtaining a driver’s license, discussing career plans, opening a bank account and knowledge about renting an apartment/living alone. Expected long term outcomes include gaining a sense of normalcy, a decrease in behavioral issues, placement stability, academic progress, independent living skills and relational permanency.
In addition to mentorship services received through the Dare to Dream program, youth can receive funding to help cover costs associated with life and job skills. Funds can be used toward driver’s education, driver’s license fees, tutoring, car insurance, first month’s rent, professional wardrobe, etc. These expenses are a hurdle for many youth aging out of care but are necessary for a successful transition to independent living. Receiving funds through the Dare to Dream program can alleviate this hurdle, increasing their ability to reach occupational goals and secure stable housing.
