Project Title: College Campus Visits for Minds Matter students
Project Description:

The mission of Minds Matter Portland is to connect highly motivated high school students from low-income backgrounds with dedicated mentors and academic support, empowering them to achieve success in higher education and beyond.

We understand that potential is universal, but opportunity is not. Our work is rooted in education equity and the belief that any student who aspires to attend college and pursue their full potential should have the resources and support to do so – regardless of family income.

Our program takes place on Saturdays during the school year and currently serves 64 students from all over the Portland area. Students begin our 3-year program as sophomores and stay in the program until they graduate. Our program consists of 3 main components – Academic Success (tutoring, test prep), Mentorship (1:1 mentorship throughout the program), and College Readiness (attend pre-college summer programs, visit college campuses, receive 1:1 college counseling and application support). This formula has resulted in consistent, high quality results. Not only do 100% of our students gain admission to multiple 4-year colleges, but they also receive substantial financial aid packages and scholarships that cover 90%+ of their financial need.

College campus visits are a key component in our College Readiness curriculum. We do 3 visits each year to high quality colleges and universities in the Portland area including Reed College, University of Portland, and Pacific Lutheran University. For our students, these visits provide a unique opportunity to explore college campuses and programs, ask questions to admission reps and current college students, and meet college faculty. Since the majority of our students go on to become the first in their families to go to college, these visits provide valuable insight to our students that they may not have access to otherwise.
