Project Title: College Support and Mentoring for Historically Underserved Students
Project Description:
The TeamWork Education Foundation is transforming the educational trajectories of students in Palm Beach County by providing comprehensive support to help them achieve economic mobility and contribute to the local economy. While Pell Grants support those below the poverty line, and wealthier families can rely on resources, many students fall in between, earning too much to qualify for aid, yet still unable to afford tuition. Often the first in their families to attend college, they lack the support systems needed to succeed. TeamWork fills this gap by supporting students slightly above the poverty level, frequently from two-working-parent households, and in some cases, non-traditional students returning to school. In partnership with Palm Beach State College, TeamWork ensures students graduate with little or no debt and enter careers that contribute to Palm Beach County’s economic vitality.
TeamWork’s program comprehensively serves these students by not just providing access to education, but also providing individual support by matching them with mentors from TeamWork’s pool of deeply committed volunteers. Mentorship helps students navigate the challenges of attending college and stay on track for graduation in spite of any challenges they face. TeamWork’s current cohort of students are studying in highly marketable fields, including Sonography (4 students), Environmental Science (3 students), Electrical Power Technology (3 students), Biotech (3 students), Ophthalmic (1 student), Engineering Technology (2 students), and Radiology (4 students).
With the support of the Hermanowski Foundation, we will provide scholarship funding to four additional students. Support from the Foundation will fund the equivalent of one year (30 credit hours) of education. Students who remain in good academic standing will receive continued support for their second year; with this contribution, the Hermanowski Foundation would make a significant contribution to the success of students and the overall economic health of Palm Beach County.
