Project Title: Youth Summer Nutrition & Learning Program
Project Description:
The Family Service Association of Redlands (FSA) Summer Lunch Program will serve children in San Bernardino County’s Central and East Valley, providing nutritious meals and enriching activities during the summer months when access to free or reduced-price school meals is limited. The program will serve approximately 40 to 60 school-aged children each week, ensuring consistent food access while promoting learning, creativity, and positive social engagement. This program expands upon FSA’s year-round, on-site Nutritional Breakfast Program, which operates Monday through Friday and serves more than 22,000 meals to low-income and homeless residents annually. Family Service provides basic needs and housing support to over 3,000 families annually.
Running from June 15 through August 15, the Summer Lunch Program pairs healthy lunches with arts and crafts activities focused on learning and literacy, helping children stay academically engaged while school is out. Activities include educational-based crafts, creative expression projects, and guided group activities that support fine motor skills, language development, and confidence-building in a safe, supportive environment.
To ensure effective implementation, FSA will employ a temporary program coordinator for the duration of the program. The coordinator will work 25 hours per week and will be responsible for coordinating meal distribution, supervising activities, collaborating with school district partners, and ensuring program compliance.
Program needs include, fresh food, meal service supplies such as plates and napkins, as well as arts and crafts materials to support hands-on learning and creative activities. These supplies are essential to maintaining a welcoming, organized, and engaging program environment.
This program will address summer hunger while fostering educational continuity, creativity, and overall well-being for children in the Redlands and Yucaipa communities.
