Project Title: The Eduction Partnership
Project Description:
provides free classroom supplies that reach more than 69,000 students and 10,000 teachers in 191 under-resourced schools across an eight-county region. Since 2009, TEP has distributed over $75 million in educational materials, helping ensure that students from low-income families have the basic tools they need to learn, participate, and succeed.
Demand for TEP’s services has grown significantly, and inequities intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic have made reliable access to school essentials even more urgent. To meet this need, TEP is expanding its operations in Pittsburgh’s Elliott neighborhood, within the Chartiers Avenue Avenues of Hope corridor. The project will stabilize and remediate an unstable hillside and then construct a new 11,200-square-foot warehouse on land owned by TEP.
This expansion will add more than 200 pallet spaces and create dedicated volunteer and office areas, strengthening logistics and staffing capacity for long-term growth. Once complete, the new facility will double TEP’s distribution capacity, enabling the organization to deliver up to $20 million in supplies annually. These resources will include core classroom materials, STEAM kits, and hygiene items, all provided at no cost to schools or families.
The need is clear: more than 96% of students served by TEP qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Beyond increasing educational equity, the project will generate local construction jobs, prioritize Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises in contracting, and create permanent positions to support expanded operations. By converting vacant, unstable land into a productive community asset, the project advances Pittsburgh’s equity-driven Avenues of Hope Initiative, supports recovery from pandemic-related learning loss, and contributes to neighborhood revitalization and economic opportunity.
