Project Title: Supporting Children and Young Adults Through Family-Based Prevention
Project Description:

The Children and Youth Cabinet of Rhode Island (CYC) seeks $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support the delivery of culturally responsive, youth-centered prevention programming that improves the health, wellbeing, and life outcomes of children and young adults up to age 21.
This project directly aligns with the Foundation’s mission to improve and transform the lives of children and young people by addressing multiple aspects of a child’s life, including health, education, and overall welfare. CYC will implement evidence-based family strengthening programs, including Strong African American Families (SAAF) and Familias Unidas (FamU), that equip youth and their caregivers with practical tools to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and promote positive youth development.
Hermanowski Foundation funding will support SAAF and FamU program delivery costs, for one program cycle of each, that ensure families can fully participate and benefit from services. Over the course of 8 and 14 weeks respectively, these programs require the following costs to run with quality: trained facilitator stipends, curriculum materials, food and transportation support, interpretation and translation services, and modest participation incentives. By reducing practical barriers to participation, the project ensures that children and young adults are supported in stable, nurturing family environments that foster resilience and long-term success.
The project also incorporates youth-informed well-being practices that center young people’s voices in defining and strengthening well-being. Youth and caregivers will reflect on changes in connection, communication, and emotional wellbeing throughout the program through ongoing surveys and conversation, allowing facilitators to respond to needs in real time and strengthen outcomes.
By focusing on prevention, education, and family support, this project provides children and young adults with the tools they need to achieve their full potential, while advancing the Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to health and welfare services that create meaningful, lasting impact for families.
