Project Title: Art and STEM Programs for Developmentally Disabled Children
Project Description:
The Bruce Harter Learning Pavilion (BHLP) is a premier early childhood learning and intervention center in Tallahassee, Florida, serving an average of 200+ children annually. BHLP is one of only two programs in Florida’s Capital City offering onsite, integrated therapeutic services—including occupational, speech, music, and physical therapies—for students with developmental or physical delays from infancy through Pre-K. The other provider serves children with severe and complex disabilities. As a result, children with mild to moderate developmental needs—who do not qualify for intensive specialty programs but still require early intervention—would have no appropriate local option without BHLP. By filling this critical gap, BHLP ensures early support for children often overlooked by traditional childcare and public systems. Nearly half of the families we serve qualify as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), making BHLP an indispensable access point for timely, comprehensive care.
Our mission aligns directly with the Hermanowski Foundation’s goal to “improve and transform the lives of children and young adults” by equipping every child to reach their full potential—ensuring children with and without disabilities thrive in a diverse learning environment. We seek support to enhance our specialized STEM and Art classrooms, designed to accelerate developmental milestones through smart, play-based learning. These multisensory environments function as clinical extensions where hands-on activities strengthen motor, cognitive, and social-emotional skills essential for kindergarten readiness.
In our STEM laboratory, children engage in sensory-rich activities that promote problem-solving and logical thinking. The Art classroom provides a therapeutic space for creative expression, improving motor coordination and communication while fostering community. By funding these environments, the Hermanowski Foundation is not simply purchasing supplies—it is investing in a proven early intervention model that helps children overcome developmental delays and build the foundation needed to succeed in inclusive K–12 settings and beyond.
Total Project Budget: $13,500
Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): BHLP receives funding from diverse sources to support the overall program. Committed funding includes the Florida Department of Health, Leon County’s Community Human Service Partnership Grant, the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend, Goodwill Industries – Big Bend’s Round-Up campaign proceeds, in-kind therapy services, volunteer services, and nominal tuition fees. This request supports a one-time enhancement rather than ongoing operations. We are actively fundraising for this project to include potential grant funding—in addition to this request—from the Brabson Family and Chisholm Foundations. BHLP’s long-standing partnerships and infrastructure will allow the organization to sustain the investment over time.
