Project Title: Operation Purple Camp
Project Description:
Operation PurpleĀ® Camp (OPC) provides military kids with a week of sleepaway camp at locations near military installations and areas dense with military-connected families around the country. These camps are provided at no cost to the families and are funded by the National Military Family Association and our supporters. At OPC, military kids engage in fun outdoor adventures that help them build skills and confidence. They connect with other kids like themselves, helping to reduce the isolation of military life. Additionally, they are connected to additional resources, such as support from mental health professionals to improve their well-being while at camp. During the program, the curriculum helps military kids enhance their problem-solving skills, grow their understanding of the natural world, and learn about what makes their family so special. Our academically grounded curriculum is created through a rigorous research process and includes intentional skill-building in teamwork, independence, problem-solving confidence, and pride in service. Military life demands that kids be resilient, but resilience does not come naturally. Our curriculum fosters opportunities for military kids to practice and hone the skills that support resilience in a safe, fun, and stress-free environment. Kids leave camp proud of their own service, connected with a community of peers with whom they have forged meaningful connections, and ready to tackle the challenges of military family life. NMFA provides access to mental health support at OPC by licensed mental health providers called Military Family Life Counselors (MFLCs). They work with camp staff and with the NMFA team before and during the camp experience to increase understanding of and empathy for military families. MFLCs also assist with the OPC curriculum and support camp activities. Once at OPC, campers work with the MFLCs to foster and strengthen coping and communication strategies they will carry with them long after camp ends.
