Project Title: Strengthening Youth Well-Being Through Community-Based Prevention and Mental Health Support
Project Description:
This project is a community-based prevention initiative designed to reduce alcohol and substance overuse among young people ages 16–21 by strengthening mental well-being, family connection, and positive community engagement. Many young people experience stress, trauma, social isolation, and limited access to preventive mental health support. These challenges can increase vulnerability to alcohol and substance use, especially during late adolescence and early adulthood. This project responds by addressing root causes rather than symptoms.
The program engages youth in structured, positive activities such as sports, cultural programs, and community-based group activities that promote belonging, purpose, and healthy routines. Participants build supportive peer relationships and connect with trusted adult mentors who provide guidance, encouragement, and positive role modeling. Mental health support is integrated throughout the program and is also available when youth experience mental distress, stress, or trauma. This approach helps normalize support and reduces stigma around mental health.
Families are actively included through shared activities, communication, and referrals to supportive resources. Strengthening family relationships is a key protective factor that supports youth well-being and reduces risky behaviors. The program is designed to be accessible and low-barrier, ensuring that youth from diverse backgrounds can participate regardless of school status or life circumstances.
This project aligns closely with the Hermanowski Foundation’s commitment to improving the health and welfare of children and young adults up to age 21. By focusing on prevention, mental well-being, and supportive relationships, the program promotes healthier choices and long-term resilience among youth. Over the course of one year, expected outcomes include improved mental well-being, stronger family and community connections, increased engagement in positive activities, and reduced reliance on alcohol and substances as coping mechanisms. Through early support and community-based care, this project contributes to healthier youth and stronger communities.
