Project Title: Project SUCCESS/Crossroads Mentoring Program
Project Description:

The goal of Project SUCCESS/Crossroads (PSCR) is to provide students in K-12th grade, identified as "at-risk" by school personnel, with emotional support and practical skills needed to identify and develop personal character and resiliency, succeed and graduate from high school, and cope with life’s challenges. Students are referred to program for academic, behavioral, and social issues. 31 schools participated in PSCR during 2020-2021. The objectives of PSCR are for students to improve coping and communication skills; increase ability to handle stress; resist negative peer pressures; and, increase understanding of drug and alcohol use.

A highly trained mentor, with a bachelor level degree or higher is placed in a school, one/two days per week. Mentors work with students through three main activities: mentoring small groups of students, working one-on-one with students, and providing classroom based resiliency programs. Through PSCR, student mentees receive emotional support from mentor; establish positive relationships; work to improve behavior; and, develop life skills such as goal setting; anger management; and, resistance to peer pressure. During COVID-19, these activities have been altered.

Mentors utilize following strategies to implement PSCR:
 Work closely with school staff to ensure program is established at each school and enhance each school’s efforts to improve school climate.
 Act as advocates and facilitators for students with issues that impede their academic, personal success, physical, and mental health.
 Meet with student mentees regularly to identify and address their needs.
 Facilitate prevention education sessions if issues arise that extend beyond small group setting and may impact school community.
 Train and consult on prevention issues with school staff, refer, and follow-up with students when substance abuse treatment or mental health services are needed.
 Coordinate with members of academic team, caregivers, and other social service agencies to address concerns of student mentees.

Total Project Budget: 453,260.87 (The total project budget amount listed is the 2020-2021 fiscal year amount. The 2021-2022 budget will be reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors in June, 2021. CHC expects the budget to be similar, but slightly higher to adjust for inflation.

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The Center for Humanistic Change (CHC), does not currently have any commitments for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. However, CHC expects similar grant funding to that of the 2020-2021 fiscal year.
