Project Title: The Turning Point Project: Disrupting Cycles, Building Futures
Project Description:
The mission of Freedom2Succeed (F2S) is to empower returning citizens and at-promise youth to thrive and prosper. F2S reduces recidivism and disrupts the school-to-prison pipeline in a unique way by training college-educated, formerly-incarcerated adults to be tutors for at-risk/at-promise youth. Through our tutors, we have delivered Learn2Earn Scholars™ programming in three Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS) in San Diego County, with positive, measurable results.
JCCS provides a fully accredited educational program for school-age youth who are either wards of the court or have been referred by social services, probation, or school districts. Because the tutors can model attitudes and methods of overcoming trauma and achieving career goals, F2S instructors capture immediate and sustained student attention. At JCCS campuses, they assist students with their work throughout the day and teach technology, media-arts and leadership skills.
F2S would like to expand the reach of our programming for at promise youth by requesting additional funding for a new project. A 6-week Saturday class will promote scenarios created by youth online via downloadable ELearning modules. These would be marketed to school districts and at-risk youth directly.
Our student creators would receive revenue generated from the downloads of their programs, encouraging them to pursue sustainable employment in technology and media arts, and equip them with presentation-technology skills. We would enable them to further refine and learn marketing of their behavioral simulations on gang activity, substance abuse, social media and financial literacy based on their own lived experiences.
This project will encompass 5 four-hour Saturday classes for 20 students and provide food and stipends for attending. Through this new program, students will earn revenue as they monetize their games, transferring their wisdom to broader audiences of at-risk youth via our website.
