Project Title: ActiveArt
Project Description:
ActiveArt is aZul’s monthly artistic field trip for individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities. Our programs are open to individuals aged 18 and up with the knowledge that opportunities for personal growth and social connection drastically drop off after high school. The arts represent one of the most inclusive disciplines, and a space where neurodiversity is celebrated. Unfortunately, art and culture is not always accessible to those who need it most; persons with disabilities and persons from low income households. ActiveArt was created to introduce a variety of mediums and art forms to young adults with disabilities. Each month, we plan a trip to a local art venue and provide transportation. At the venue, the hosting artist gives a talk on what it means to be an artist and shares their journey to a career in the arts. Following the artist talk, the group participates in a hands-on activity to try the art form. ActiveArt includes lunch at an upscale restaurant, where the group of up to ten adults with disabilities enjoys a meal together while they reflect on the art experience and socially connect with their peers, forming crucial friendships. If a participant shows interest in a particular art form, aZul will provide resources for further exploration. Making art is proven to reduce stress and enhance feelings of well-being. For individuals with language barriers and communication difficulties, art provides an alternative pathway to self-expression and creates a sense of belonging. Transportation is on a Limo bus, which is generously provided at a deeply discounted rate by a local company. The limo adds to the dignified experience, which is central to our mission. Past ActiveArt trips include the DaVinci Experience, Clay Haus Pottery, Tufted (textile art), and a Cher-inspired Fashion Workshop.
