Project Title: Cleanse and Grow, An Education and Conservation Project
Project Description:

Bombay Beach Arts and Culture has a vision for a multimodal green space called “Cleanse and Grow,” an educational model for energy reuse and green living. This is one of many steps BBAC, and our community, is taking toward carbon offset and agricultural sustainability. Bombay Beach has recently seen an uptick in our population of young children, and spaces for them to play and learn are limited – BBAC built a center for The Kids Club on their property last year. Learning to grow and eat healthy food is an indispensable part of a child’s education.

Cleanse and Grow is a community initiative that is part public park, part garden, and part educational model. In this space, we will offer classes and volunteer opportunities, so that our local children have an opportunity to grow and care for the food they eat. It is the hope that this model of green living could be an educational resource for children outside of our community too – perhaps becoming a site for field trips, seminars, and educational conferences for schools and preservation societies.

We are applying for the installation of a Reed pond, which would filter gray water from washing clothes that would typically go to waste. After undergoing a filtration process, water would be directed towards a community garden. A community partner is interested in donating fish, primarily tilapia, which would be raised in the pond and harvested at the end of the summer for a large community fish fry. BBAC hosts community feasts every month, so this would make those events more sustainable and locally sourced. Bombay Beach is determined to invest in supplemental educational programs for our children as much as possible, and cultivating an interest in sustainability in our youth is critical.
