Project Title: Support for Therapeutic Riding Program
Project Description:

Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida provides therapeutic riding and equine activities for children and adults with special needs so that they may improve physically, mentally and emotionally. Participants in our programs range in age from 4 to 84. Many of these students have Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, and developmental delays which affect their mobility and communication skills. More than 50% of our students are on the Autism Spectrum, many of those with multiple diagnoses.

Equine therapy serves as an adjunct treatment that provides benefits not found within standard medical interventions. Specifically, Therapeutic Riding is a mounted program with the goal of teaching riding skills as a way to positively impact the cognitive, physical, emotional and social wellbeing of the rider with special needs. Horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a motion similar to the human gait. During an average lesson, a rider may experience therapeutic movement of their hips up to 2,500 times in a way that is not easily replicable when using rehabilitative machinery.

The grant would help make it possible to keep this program affordable for families that are already spread thin financially because of high medical costs associated with their loved one’s physical, cognitive or emotional disability.
