Project Title: Pediatric Outpatient Therapy Program (occupational, physical, speech)
Project Description:
TheraYouth improves the lives of children in underserved communities by helping them overcome physical and developmental barriers through outpatient therapy. Our project provides occupational, physical, and speech therapy to children for whom treatment is inaccessible due to cost, scarcity of providers, or space in government programs.
There is a lack of affordable outpatient therapy for low-income families in high density neighborhoods. Limited insurance reimbursement forces clinics to charge high fees. They often refuse Medicaid, government insurance for those with limited incomes, due to the low reimbursement rate of ~$35 per session. In a community where 21% of children under 18 live below the Federal Poverty Level, need is evidenced by the 220 children on our waiting list.
TheraYouth provides one-on-one treatment for speech defects and delays, orthopedic and postural impairments, motor skill, and sensory processing challenges. We are currently treating 40 children in our clinic at 65 Jefferson Avenue, Elizabeth, New Jersey, close to many families and major public transit routes.
Children are referred by area pediatricians, public schools, and social service organizations. Our licensed therapists make clinical evaluations and a child begins treatment once another child graduates.
As a result of our programs, a greater number of children experience improved function, symptom reduction, enhanced coping skills, and better quality of life. In our first 17 months, we have delivered 2,226 therapy sessions, helping 123 children improve their health.
Upon graduation from treatment, all families are surveyed regarding the impact of therapy. Topics center on the following:
– Do families know more ways to work through issues presented by their child’s impairment, disability, or delay?
– Has therapy has improved their child’s ability to communicate their needs at home?
– Has their child shown an improved ability to complete activities of daily living?
– Are they more hopeful about the future?
