Project Title: Educational Advocacy for Foster Youth
Project Description:

We are pleased to introduce Families Uniting Families (FUF) to The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation. We respectfully request your support in the amount of $10,000 toward our broad range of educational advocacy services for foster youth.

FUF’s mission is to cultivate nurturing and knowledgeable families to protect and meaningfully enhance the welfare and stability of vulnerable children and their families. In addition to our licensed foster care program and adoption services agency, we provide intensive, individualized, evidence-based services that meet the needs of low-income parents and children in Los Angeles County involved, or at risk of becoming involved, with the child welfare and/or criminal justice systems through our Project Fatherhood (PF) program.

Through PF, we provide unique services to children ages 0 to 24 whose parents are engaged in the program as well as the foster youth enrolled in our foster care agency. Services include tutoring, academic enrichment, and mental health supports such as play therapy. Additionally, we support families with requesting and updating Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans, as well as conduct child development screenings. We also provide teachers with professional development and guidance on managing challenging behavior and promoting a supportive learning environment for foster youth. FUF also coordinates transportation as needed, thereby reducing barriers to school attendance. Our cushioning of support helps ensure we meet the comprehensive needs of vulnerable families — ultimately preventing child abuse and neglect. In 2024, we provided educational advocacy services to 65 children — which is more than ever before.

PF services are never timebound — we work with children for as long as they need to succeed and achieve their full potential. Our team of dedicated social workers provide clinical case management support and establish authentic relationships, co-creating individualized service plans. Thank you for your consideration of our request.
