Project Title: Athletics team expansion
Project Description:

Rainier Prep’s Athletics program is dedicated to expanding equitable access to high-quality team sports for BIPOC and limited-income students in South King County. With many of our students experiencing organized sports for the first time, we are focused on increasing coaching capacity, engaging community partners, and building a seamless pathway between our Physical Education curriculum, afternoon Enrichments, and after-school Athletics. This alignment fosters skill development, teamwork, and consistent participation in recreation and play.

Serving 360 students—96% BIPOC and 82% from limited-income families—Rainier Prep is a top 10% school statewide for academic growth. Despite this success, unequal state funding for charter schools limits our ability to offer Athletics programs that meet our students’ interests and needs. Our expanded Enrichment programming and Athletics bridge this gap by providing inclusive, culturally responsive opportunities for physical activity, skill-building, and social-emotional growth.

With more teams, more students explore new interests, develop leadership skills, and build confidence. PE teachers already track cardiovascular endurance for all 5th-8th grade students using Pacer test data and assess skills in cooperation, inclusivity, and positive communication. Our goal is 90% student-participant retention and 70% overall student engagement.

Parents have expressed gratitude for the positive impact of sports on their children, and many students are experiencing the joy of being part of a team for the first time. We are also fostering leadership, with students volunteering to teach younger grades. As we expand our offerings to include cross country and flag football over the next three years, our biggest challenge remains access to adequate facilities.
