Project Title: Teens RISE
Project Description:
Teens RISE is a leadership development program for local teens. Teen health ambassadors:
• Receive education and resources they can share with their peers (since Tennessee law does not allow fact-based, inclusive, affirming reproductive and sexual health education).
• Receive mentorship and support from RISE staff and volunteers around trauma-informed care, affirming behaviors, and spoken communication.
• Learn how the legislative process works in Tennessee and actively participate in it annually by meeting with legislators about bills that are important to them and attending hearings.
• Help facilitate RISE community programming and help staff community events.
• Share a seat on RISE’s board.
The group meets at least monthly during the school year. Up to 5 youth are enrolled in the program each year and receive a $50/month stipend for sharing their experience, insights, and time.
In total this program costs about $15,000/year to run, including:
• Food, lodging, activities, and transportation for the Nashville trip
• Food at monthly meetings.
• Training for youth.
• Monthly Stipends
• The cost of prepping for and staffing regular meetings and the Nashville trip.
• Administrative costs such as paying stipends, keeping consent forms updated, etc.
Teens RISE is our hope for the future. They have the passion to make change now and the energy to carry it forward. They are eager to learn and humble about what they don ‘t know. In addition to RISE mentoring these teens, Teens RISE keeps us accountable to youth in our region. They are the future we want to see–healthy, compassionate, inclusive and affirming, and eager to learn.
