Project Title: To Write Love on Her Arms – General Operations
Project Description:

TWLOHA began in 2006 as a grassroots movement to bring hope and help to those struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. Today, we are a globally recognized mental health organization, reaching 26.8 million people annually and providing direct support across the country.

Our founder, Jamie Tworkowski, never intended to start a nonprofit—he just wanted to help his friend, Renee. When she couldn’t afford treatment, Jamie and his friends sold T-shirts to help cover her care. He also wrote her story, “To Write Love on Her Arms,” and posted it online. The message went viral, fueled by social media and musicians who shared their own struggles, sparking a movement.

Storytelling remains at the heart of TWLOHA’s work. We reduce stigma and motivate help-seeking by sharing lived experiences across multiple platforms: social media, music festivals, podcasts, schools, web tools, and merchandise. Although we are not a crisis line, we have a deep trust with the public and are able to point 150 people each month in crisis to life saving resources.

TWLOHA has a presence at 20 festivals and events, reaches 175 million people online, distributes 20,000 pieces of missional merchandise, and facilitates 1,800 crisis interventions annually. Our Mental Health Toolkit has equipped 100,000 people with practical self-care strategies, while our FIND HELP Tool has helped 11,000 individuals connect with therapists and support groups. Additionally, we fund 5,000 hours of therapy each year, ensuring those who need care can access it. Our free teen mental health literacy curriculum, Between the Bells, has partnered with 300 schools across America, an impact of over 200,000 students.

By combining storytelling, resource distribution, and direct intervention, TWLOHA offers a comprehensive, far-reaching approach to mental health advocacy—standing in the gap for those who need hope and help most.
